i'm usually not a fan of this type of music but man....Their bass tone sounds sooooo freaking awesome and they remind me so much of x japan (not sure if anyone's familiar w/ them)

I used to listen to them when I was younger. To me the guy's tone is way too clanky, trebly and not so great. He's not a bad player, just the tone to me sounds very bad on the majority of their songs.

I think they're great, very emotional music.

I love Dir en grey. They're constantly changing. Some people do not like the progression they've made, but I think its cool that they're always doing something different from album to album.

Some of Toshiya's best bass work in my opinion though is off of the earlier stuff, like Yokan, Yurameki, [kr]Cube, Garden and so on.

If they remind you of X-Japan its because their albums (at least I know Gauze was) produced by members of X-Japan in their studios.

My wife loves them, X-Japan, Malice Mizer, L'arc en Ciel, all that J-rock. I personally don't like Dir en Grey, though the intro to "Child Prey" is not something I've been able to forget.

Can't say I like them, but I always get a giggle out of how they change from one fashion to another every so often.

I think Dir En Grey are fantastic, But the best Bassist in Japan Imo is Tetsu from l'arc En Ciel.

Love his bass playing on Lover Boy.

Seiji Kameda is another great bassist from Japan. Great producer, musician and so on as well.

I'm afraid Masaki destroys them all.

I saw these guys play live at some festival a couple years ago. They sounded pretty generic, but the singer was covered in blood by the end of the show. That's more or less what I remember about 'em.

For the past few years, Dir en grey has been moving in a heavier direction. Kyo's stage antics are disturbing, but when you're trying to communicate lyrics about rape, abandonment and suicide in a foreign country with an entirely different language, I suppose embodying that is the way to go about making sure people feel the way you want them to.

As far as liking or disliking them... I'm the least objective when it comes to their music.
