Anyone ever heard of Skuli Sverrisson?

Sign in to disble this ad
i've been listening to Allan Holdsworth's "Hard Hat Area" and Mo Boma's "Myths of the Near Future Part 1" for the past couple of months and i must say, Skuli is an amazing player. His solos are really melodic but he can go fast without losing feel. does anyone have any backround info on him? i'd like to hear some stuff about, there isn't much about him anywhere

He is also part of pachora.
That's all I know at the mo.
Do have a look on www.allmusic.com

Bass Player magazine had a short article on him in the March '99 issue (Mike Mills on the cover.) In the article, Sverisson talked about creating and recording "cells".. audio snapshots or samples of sounds that he'd compile and then use as part of the compositonal process. He also talked a bit about using devices like prepared bass and the eBow. He was pictured with a Curbow 6-string.

Yeah, I ordered his latest cd and listened to it one time. Haven't listened to it since. I think it's called serimone or something weird like that. It was just a bunch of samples and noises with no real pattern. I thought it was for a horror flick or something.

I will say this. I think his work with Holdsworth was some of the best fingerstyle bass playing I've ever heard. He was really busy on some of those tracks but it never took away from the groove of the song. Awesome chops, and of course, a Berklee grad imported from Iceland. What a combo.

Skuli's my boy! I have been trying to help spread his name for years!
He's definitely one of my heroes. Ben Monder introduced me to him before they recorded "Excavation" together and I got to talk with him before and after the sessions took place. Skuli takes a solo on a track on that album called "Ellenville" that always gets me. He seems to utilize some of the same energy and ideas he had with Holdsworth's incredible band but also brought in these new things that I'd never heard him do before. There are moments that really remind me of a flamenco guitarist. Much like his solo on "Low Levels, High Stakes" from Allan's record "Hard Hat Area". Both are very, very high elevations of our art form! Of course he's also a stellar sideman and that's where I think he actually shines the most.

I recently bought some newer stuff from Jim Black that Skuli played on. Both on Winter & Winter. One called "Splay" and the other, "Habyor" under the group name "Alas No Axis". Both albums have strong "indie" sensibilities yet also bring many complex harmonics and metrics.

His recent solo stuff is out there, for sure. Being a huge fan of Ikue Mori, I enjoy some of these excursions but would much rather hear him play bass!

More people need to know about this guy!

*sidenote: Before he got a Curbow, Skuli was mainly playing a Tobias Classic 6 string in Holdsworth's band. It can be seen in the Holdsworth REH instructional video.
