Anyone like Jeff Dimpsey from Hum?

I always thought his lines were pretty cool. And he has a great sound.

Bummer that they didn't make the bass a little more present in the mixes though.

What do y'all think?

I think I hear SVT and a P or Jazz bass in those recordings. Hum is one of my favorite bands ever.

Downward is Heavenward and You'd Prefer an Astronaut should be a staple for any person interested in dropped D melodic geek rock.

I was just gonna edit my post, but you beat me to my question.

What gear did he use?

In the Downward is Heavenward book, he's got the Ampeg Amp, 8x10 cab (I'm guessing these are vintage). Then he has 2 other things rackmounted. I thought the top piece was something Trace Elliot?

I know he had a Stingray for a lot of stuff. And I know he used a G&L, but what kind? I guess a p-bass copy?

Any effects? Probably nothing but dirt, but did he use pedals for his dirt?

Yea, great band, I agree.

As of last year Mr. Jeff Dimpsey has a computer related job the University of Texas. No idea if he is still there.

Cool factoid I just found.

Jeff isn't doing National Skyline anymore. I had read he was working with a band called Absinthe Blind, but I don't think he's doing that either. I think he pretty much retired out.

Great band though man.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was when they went on Howard Stern to play "Stars," and refused to do it unless they could set up the full band and turn their amps up to concert level. But back then, Howard had this tiny little studio and the staff wanted them to play acoustically or use small amps turned down and they refused and acted like these arrogant little upstarts determined never ever to compromise, even in a 20x20 room. Finally Howard told them to set up how they wanted, and they did the song, and almost immediately their career was over. Shame because they had good songs. But it was a classic moment in Stern history.

HUM is one of those bands that kills me every time I listen to them.. Seems he's playing a J-bass in the official video for 'Stars'.. and I can't find a clip of the Howard Stern show of the actual song, only for the lead up. But that sound got me into rock music in a big way, and they are the one and only band I have listened to constantly since I was about 12.. that's going on 17 years now and my love for that tone and their music is no longer driven by nostalgia as it once might have been.
I know this is an old thread but I've been bumping around on eBay for old posters and whatnot, trying to find out more about Jeff Dempsey. And that Tim Nash... man, not that we're supposed to fawn over guitarsists or anything.. ;-)
