Anyone see it - it was on last night in my area. John Paul Jones was ripping it up on an unusual bass. Anyone know what it was ? It was Grey quilt, had LEDs in the neck, and from what I could tell, looked like it had 5 or 6 bass tuners plus 4 small guitar-type tuners. Never got a really good look at it. Plus, as an aside, is Dave Grohl on steroids lately lol ? He had some guns !

I saw it too, there was a thread about it a few months ago so it must've been a repeat. The bass was a 10 string (5 string tuned to octaves), don't know what it was. The 4 string looked like a Pedulla. My wife and I noticed the same thing about Grohl.

Oh, lawd, they were simply unreal when they came to Toronto.
Dave Grohl burned about 3000 calories hitting those drums. Josh Homme was cool as always (he's a hero).

But of course, the highlight was JPJ. He came out at first with this sick 10-string purple slide monstrosity, then with a 5-string, then a regular 4-string, then a fiddle, then a keytar, and then he played bass again, and then he had a piano solo, and then... and then... and then...

I thought it was great me and the wife watched it last night. They have a very distinct sound.

Those are all Manson basses (http://www.mansonguitars.co.uk/JPJ%20gallery/index.htm) JPJ rocked as well when I saw him in Las Vegas. He played all the above and an organ as well

Just beat me to it. I was going to post that exact link too!

TCV were awesome when we saw them in San Francisco but the highlight of the show was JPJ's piano solo. Such a talented cat.

I'm watching it on my DVR right now. Love the big purple lap steel thing! Sounds dirty in a lot of ways!

I missed most of it, but it said at the end of the broadcast that full shows are available on their (ACL)website, I think - def plan to check it out ! He was tearing it up in an extended jam on that grey one ! And his work on the keys was stellar, too ! I gained a whole new respect for him in regards to his versatility Edit: here`s the link: http://video.pbs.org/video/1397479116/

I am a Zep and JPJ fan from way back, but "Them Crooked Vultures" just don't do it for me. Glad you guys like 'em, but I'll pass.

Well, I checked out a couple tracks from their album when it came out. I agree(d) with you - I wasn`t impressed. But I just finished watching the vid, and I may need to change my drawers. Most bands are better in the studio, of course. Some can really deliver live. And then there is the rare band that just explodes onstage, becoming an entirely different entity, eclipsing their studio work - TCV fall in this category. I`m no fan of Homme`s acid - crooner vocals, or the whole "supergroup" thing. But, wow. Instrumentally, they were absolutely mind-blowing. JPJ & Grohl were like a locomotive, the guitar work was clean and precise, and the arrangements were great. I too am an old-school JPJ fan, but after seeing that, he is a hero reborn. Amazing !

Their record is one of those albums you have to listen to a few times just so you can "get it." I felt the same way at first and now I absolutely LOVE the record and it's one of my favourite albums.

I agree with what was previously said, definitely a record I had to listen to about 3 times through before I really enjoyed/appreciated the songs.

They are crazy tight together live.

Lastly, I think Grohl is just getting old and gaining some weight, although I would think he'd be losing the way he's pounding that set.
