Apparently, bass players are no longer needed for bands

Hopped on the musicians community forum on craigslist this morning and found these two postings, so, I posted back with a piece of my mind

It just angers me when people post stuff like that

Why stop at bass players? Musicians aren't really "needed" anymore. Every part can be substituted for a canned or synthesized programmed track, and even a basic understanding of composition isn't "required", and can be more economically substituted.
This is only one of many complaints I've had regarding (post-rock) popular music trends - the musicians have become interchangeable nameless accessories. Few disco musicians made names for themselves in the industry, and even fewer hip-hop musicians are doing so today.

Kromwarp, I have to say that I admire the restraint you showed in you CL ad. Me, with my Irritable Male syndrome-induced temper, I probably would have written up an obscenity-laced tirade and had the thing removed from CL!

Sounds like the dude was just trolling. The only thing that can replace us (and do a poor job of it) is a keyboard player's left-hand.

I's like to share some choice words that come to mind about idiots like that. But they'd result in a like time ban from TB.

Anyway, I find it's often the bass player in amateur bands that has the most musical knowledge.

+5

dont worry most of those people with that view have bad taste in music and barely understand it.

i was once told just to let D ring, the drummer shook his head and laughed and did what i do. the guy was/is a hipster so he thinks solely playing with pedal nobs is art cause the sound is lacking of any. dont get me wrong you can make something beautiful with sound manipulation but dont call it anything unless is something.

I actually think this kind of trolling makes playing bass even cooler.

I think those were written by angry guitards who never got as much action as their bassplayer. Must be an angry time in guitard land.

We bass players should boycott their asses, and see how they like the thin, tinny dry sound and no groove music they would be left with.

Say a two week boycott/ Strike. If you want to gig , find a bass player, and do a duet gig. Or have a holiday. Shun them all, except the brethren.

Boss now make a vocal processor with built in autotune.

I guess with a fretless bass, a boss OC-2 and a fuzz that could be awesome for making 8bit tunez, but the future is bleak if every singer can afford a vocal processor like that.

I don't. They were almost ten years ago, and every other band Jack White's started has had a bass player.

Might as well blame the electric guitar for wiping out horn sections.

He probably plays guitar and uses some ridiculously low tuning to be "heavy" and doesn't realize he is actually playing in the bass range... a frustrated closet (and probably out of tune) "bass" player.

This all started from a blues / rock trio (about 75% blues, 25% rock looking for a bassplayer. The put up multiple ads a day. I was actually supposed to audition for them this past monday. When their ads became a little more disrespectful to bassplayers I sent them this email.

Hi Rob. I saw your ad and really didn't care for the tone. I think I'm gonna pass.

To which he responded

The tone was set by having typical bass players being too wimpy and sensitive to even show up. I dont care if you dont like the tone. You probably cant play anyway.

The next day he put up an ad saying there were no bass players in GR. Gee I wonder why you can't find any. And we were off to the races from there.
