I heard this guy on XMPR today. I really think he's worth checking out(for those not already in the know, atleast).

I saw him with his trio at a club here a few months back, absolutely amazing, some of the best double bass playing I have ever ever seen..

he's one of those players who has the balance between technical prowess and serving the song..

plus for the encore he pulled out a gorgeous cream finish fender jazz

I'm pretty sure he's got a new album out now

Besides double bass, I really dig Avishai's electric playing too! His album 'Unity' has some wonderful playing with Avishai on electric bass and Yagil Baras on upright. I really think Avishai's composing is great. Along with Fima Ephron, Matthew Garrison, Christian McBride, Tony Grey etc. the future of bassist that smoke and also compose is very bright.......some great music being made out there IMHO!

He's a good bass player, and a good composer, too.

...great to see you here Ruben! That bass is killer!

Avishai is one of my favorite bassists that I have been into since I saw him in the mid-90's with Danilo, while living in Boston... and with that Tuba/Trombone group (The Plunge) that Bob Moses had put together. By far, one of the most musical players out there today.

Hey j-raj, how's things? I remember Avishai when he was studying in NYC, he used to hang at gigs checking out Latin bands, I think he was studying w/ Andy Gonzalez at the time.

Stay well,
R

yeh it was a real beauty.

he did some awesome grooving on it and some really cool slap as well..the bass itself was a bit worn..we're not talking jaco standards..but just the right amount to make it look like a well toured instrument..

he seemed like a really down to earth kind of guy..

dare I ask how much you sold it for ?

cheers.

andrew

That's cool that he studied with Andy, what a great upright player!... just the other day I rented that movie Pinero, and there is a shot of Andy playing during one of the poetry vignettes @ NPC.

... I knew I'd see you chime in on this thread .

Adama was the first album that I got... now that he has a few, it's real tough, Lyla, Colours and At Home are currently in rotation on my iPod...

I absolutely agree with you (:
I saw him in Bergen at Nattjazz a few weeks ago, and it remains probably the best gig I've seen. And he got out that same bass for the encore. The place was so small that he at one point got off stage, still playing, and started dancing with this girl by the stage. It was such an amazing experience! I even got to talk with him for a bit after the show and got the cd signed, and he seems like an amazing guy off stage as well.

Sorry to resurrect this old topic, but I just finished watching "As is...live at the Blue Note", a live dvd of Avishai and his band. I'm speechless! Awesome playing from everyone.
Highly recommended if you like this kind of music.

Where did you pick up the DVD?
OK, found it....would help if I could spell!

Something maybe similar & equally happenin'-
Fima Ephron's Soul Machine. Ethnic/Jewish-style/Odd-Poly metered in a Jazz vibe.

I got it from a vendor (MovieMars) on the Amazon Marketplace that sold it new for $6.50, a no brainer at that price.

Another dvd featuring Avishai that I really liked was the Chick Corea Rendezvous in NY: The new trio. Awesome just to see Corea + Jeff Ballard + Avishai on the same stage

I need that one, too (plus the Three Quartets DVD). I'm also gonna re-visit the Origin box set soon!
