AWB Bass: Alan Gorrie & Hamish Stuart!

I've loved these guys for years, but now that I have a fretless, I am really studying their work. I only have one song with one of them on fretless, "Message in the Middle of the Bottom," (actually on Chaka Khan's first solo CD with Hamish Stuart on bass), but the slippery sort of finger funk they play really translates well on fretless. This is important since I want a fretless style that is fairly low on the mwah and high on rythmn and funk.

Youngs guys, if you really want to learn about rythmn, get a copy of The Best of the Average White Band, and give the slap a break!

AMEN BROTHER!!!! AWB is the first funk albums i learned to play to. they are my foundations of funk. I love the self-titled, cut the cake, soul searching, and live albums.

ALso, AWB taught me that Funk ain't a color thing, white folk can funk too.

They were both mainly pick players and kings of the art of note placement. I don't think there is a wasted note on those albums, great examples of the space between the notes defining the funk!

Alan Gorrie plays with a pick? I know Hamish does because he used one with McCartney, but I thought it was because it was McCartney.
