I've loved these guys for years, but now that I have a fretless, I am really studying their work. I only have one song with one of them on fretless, "Message in the Middle of the Bottom," (actually on Chaka Khan's first solo CD with Hamish Stuart on bass), but the slippery sort of finger funk they play really translates well on fretless. This is important since I want a fretless style that is fairly low on the mwah and high on rythmn and funk.
Youngs guys, if you really want to learn about rythmn, get a copy of
The Best of the Average White Band, and give the slap a break!
