Awesome little known bass player.

Hi guys,

I just posted a compilation of some Nico Assumpção solos to youtube. Nico was an amazing brazilian bass player (electric and upright!) that unfortunately died too young because of cancer.

This show was recorded live in 1988 and I was there. Great times.

I had the opportunity to share a lot with him in the nineties, besides being a great bass player and musician he was a gentleman and great guy all around. Left very good memories.

We have talked about Nico in other threads...he had chops to burn & a great slap/pop thing. I have some of his recordings with Ricardo Silveri. Nice '80-style Fusion.
Nico (RIP) is missed.

Huge Nico fan, here....from his early, funky slapping period to the apex of his career, burnin' 6 string chops and solos, I love it all.

Every bassist should own Tres, and Tocando Victor Assis Brasil, the two albums I think really best showcase Nico. I have a bunch of other stuff he's on, and it's all great.

When I was 18, playing with a singer at a jazz club, I saw this guy coming in and it was him. I got all nervous and stuff... Messed up big time.

He then came to me at the end of the show and said "Listen, when you do a mistake, look at the guitar player. Everyone will think it was him". And we went to have dinner. Great guy! I have several funny stories from that time. He was always smiling.

That's a great story! Sad that he's no longer with us....I just listened to that Tocando Victor Assis Brasil album on my iPod. Man, he was so awesome! Such a melodic soloist, and such beautiful tone....

And the tone was in the hands. I recorded him a couple of times, bass straight in the console. Always.

Right on....and I bet he ran his onboard EQ close to flat--maybe a bit of bass boost and cut the highs.....

This guy is amazing! I just recently discovered him.

Very sad to learn that he passed away as well.
