Who saw the PBS program where Paul Simon was awarded the Gershwin prize for popular song? Bakithi Khumalo played all but some upright parts for the program. He really nailed an old Graceland piece that he, Paul Simon, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed. He had a really cool looking four string singecut fretless with a light colored unmarked fingerboard. He sounded great on that fretless! I felt like it was 1986 again!

(He's up close, personal, funny and he's got "that" bass with him.) The thing that really suprised me was when Stevie Wonder actually stopped "Loves me like a rock" mid tune, only to start the whole thing over. Yowzer!

I only caught a couple of cuts... bassist looked like he was playing some sort of Warwick through a DB750 and AG410 (although we were obviously hearing the direct sound). Nice playing... but Gadd.. that's what I'm talkin' about! |
