Thanks for the post - nice to see the man close up (although that IS one of the ugliest basses I've ever seen!). You really hear the influence of Zulu singing in the man's bass lines...

Fantastic lines and playing for sure, but the spirit he channels into his music is truly special. Thanks for sharing!

Someone should remind Bathiki that you can't slap on a fretless.

His tone is KILLER. iExcellente!

I had just picked up electric bass the year this album was released - I think I'd forgotten how massively influential his playing was!

I think is true as recalled from an interview or magazine article....

The bass break on "You Can Call Me Al" was a snippet that was recorded and then reversed and attached to the and of the original....so it went something like this...(these arent notes just a symbolic way to make my point):

abcdefg:gfedcba

Dont know if that gets the idea across....

I had to learn this break once for a band and it wasnt until LONG AFTER that band that I read the article....I think it is actually true!!

It is true. Explanation is featured in "Bass Player Presents the Fretless Bass." Kumalo improvised the break, then engineer Roy Halle flipped over the tape and spliced the lick to itself, backwards.
