Jamming with my mates today, waiting for the drummer, me and the guitarist jammed, me on guitar him on drums.

Whilst playing guitar i realised, its alot of fun too! hence wondering whether there are bands which the bassist also plays guitar on some tracks.

I know that Chris Wolstenholme plays guitar live when they play the song hoodoo.

Dunno if you're into Christian, but there's a band called Jars of Clay where everybody plays at least two instruments and three out of the six can sing. On their debut CD, the instruments used included guitar, bass, drums (including standard kit and african), piano, mandolin, violin, cello, oboe/cor anglais, and ocarina. Whoever plays what's required jumps on that instrument, and that might be different for every song.

I've seen plenty of cover bands that had male and female lead singers who swapped out instruments; the male lead singer was the bassist when he didn't sing; when he was, the female lead singer took over rhythm guitar and the rhythm guitarist went to bass. With a group like that you could cover practically any pop song ever written.

I do that for a few songs a friend wrote, live. We use a gtr stand similar to the ones Yes used when they played live. A long time ago in a galaxy far away, I saw A band open for Elton John. They all had double necks, four of 'em I don't recall who they were but I'm sure the bass had a gtr neck as well as a bass.

I've been a guitarist longer than a bassist so I sometimes play guitar with my band. Generally, I reserve that for acoustic shows though because a bass backbone is more important than a 3rd guitar.

I think he means one like Alex Lifeson uses. They hold a guitar around playing position, so you can be playing one instrument and quickly switch over to guitar without having take take off or put on anything.

Duff from guns n' roses plays acoustic guitar on some gnr songs, cant think of the names i think Patients might be one of them though. I think he is one of those "all instruments" kind of guys and just ended up playing bass as his main because they needed a bassist.

Nick Oliveri used to play guitar for Kyuss when they were Sons of Kyuss, and The old bass player from NIN (you can see him in that metallica dvd; Some Kind Of Monster), he would switch between guitar and bass a fairbit

I think in the Flaming Lips, everybody plays everything. Live and studio.

Well, in my last band I was a guitarist but when we fired our bassist while recording I laid down the bass tracks as well. Now I'm back on bass and ironically battling my own guitar rig during practice. I found that when I picked up guitar I brought some of my bass playing with me. I locked in with the drums and would sometimes play bassline like guitar lines as melodies to the other guitar.

John Deacon/Queen - played a fair amount of guitar (also keyboards) in the studio, and occasional rhythm guitar live.

Prince - multi-instrumentalist, obviously - but played a lot of bass as well as everything else in the studio, and live too - particularly from the mid-90s on.

I think it's a fairly common crossover.

I play both depending on the songs. Me and my guitarist switch back and forth. The harder bass songs I play bass and the easy songs he plays bass and I play the guitar. Just look at Sting, McCartney, Ben Kenney, Prince, Check out the band Slightly Stoopid Myles and Kyle always sitch back and forth and are also great at both

In my main band one keyboard player also plays guitar and bass , the other keys player doubles on guitar, guitarist plays bass and lap steel, I play bass, double on guitar and everybody sings.

Reed Mathis from Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a killer bassist who is practically the lead instrument in the band and not to long ago he started busting out a guitar in shows and taking solos.

At practice screwin around I swiped my guitarists guitar after he asked to play my bass......we started in on a new song it and happened to have 4 of the 6 measly chords I know......the first time I'll actually play it on bass will be at the gig . Seriously considering asking if we could switch for a song ......hrm.... Seems lots of people do it...and on that simple of a song ...
