Yep, I think Stefan's been doing that ever since they started taking additional musicians with them on tour. When I saw them about a year back, they had a guitarist/keyboardist and bassist/keyboardist filling out the addiitional parts.
Back when they toured as a three piece, I think he was using a Bass VI and Taurus pedals (or something similar) to fill out the sound.
Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth would be another example, as would Jim O'Rourke during his tenure with the band. I believe Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo would also sometimes play bass when Kim played guitar (this would have been prior to O'Rourke or Mark Ibold being involved with the band).
Sterling Morrison from the Velvet Underground sometimes played bass when John Cale was on viola or keyboards. I'm pretty sure Doug Yule also played some guitar on the studio albums.
