i cannot tell you the last time i heard any new music outside of jazz or fusion that actually had a quality bassline.

What would you prefer to hear in The Meters?

Would the rest of the Meters be any different if they didn't have George Porter? I can't think of a single song where he is holding the rest of the band back. He might not be an over the top bass player, but his sense of groove is why people consider him a mater.
Jebus... I know it is your opion and my taste may be off, but listen to Pungee and think about the defniition of weakest link.
Plus Kool and The Gang?!?!?.... didn't the bassist come up with the Jungle Boogie riff. Man...that riff hooked a lot of people into Kool. and the Gang. Probably the only reason why I know their name.
OH... btw my vote would be David Schools of Wide Spread Panic. What has that guy done for the band?

Funny how so many here are talking about bass lines. I never mentioned bass lines - I'm talking about the playing. Maybe I wasn't clear on that. Regardless, I doubt many on this forum could say for sure who wrote the actual bass lines on the Meters or Kool & The Gang stuff. And yeah, I think both Porter (certainly on the earlier albums) and Bell are pretty sloppy at times. Besides, my original post said nothing about these guys being bad players - just that they were the weakest link in the band. Sorry to have caused such a disturbance in the church of Porter and Bell. |

Now, sometimes the bass has a more prominent role (Swimsuit Issue off Dirty, for example) but for the most part Kim plays root notes to ground the noisy, often rhythmless, guitars. That does, however, only make the more interesting parts stand out more.
And by the way, I am interpreting "weakest link" as "least complicated"... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
