Bashing other bassists on TB is lame

Inspired by the gene bashing forum, I thought I'd comment on how unprofessional it is for musicians to bash other musicians because they don't like what they play, how they look, who they hang with, whatever.

Regardless if you ever become a 'professional' bassist yourself or not, it makes you look like an idiot when you bash other bass players regardless of their 'talent' and gigs they get.

It looks more like bitter jealousy than anything else.
And it shows your own character.

I'm not trying to censor your speech.
I'm just saying it looks bad.

I agree! That includes playing styles as well! Sick of it!

Yeah, I know. They bash him for being a 'rich money grubbing jerk' and all the makeup and pyro etc.
It's their gig. They have been selling albums and filling stadiums for years.

There are lots of bands and musicians that can fall into the same category.

I see Gene as a bassist for a rock band. No real flashy basslines, just foundation bass to support the song. There's nothing wrong with that. I happen to think that some of his work from 1974-1978 was rather good for what the band required. He has a voice you either love or hate.
Me, I happen to think it is rather unique and there's not too many people that wouldn't know who it is.

I'm not a fan of a lot of different players and their bands.

My dad used to say...
"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".

Makes you look better. You take the high road.

+1

You don't have to like everyone or what they do but I don't see the point in "bashing" someone who:

A. Doesn't even know you are alive.
B. Can probably play rings around you.
C. Can buy and sell you and your entire life 1000x over.
D. If given the chance you would trade places with in a New York minute.
E. All of the above

+1 The bashing of another artist is really, really tiring. It's really a shame that some folks put so much energy into something that they don't like.

I agree totally. Overall this site is an embarrassment to bassists and musicians, often for the reasons you've given.

Nothing but the truth. Reminds me of these words of wisdom, which definitely would make this a better world if all of us followed them:

I find it tiring that people don't/can't understand an attempt at satire. Comedy is a part of life, whether it is dark or distasteful to you. The cool thing about this forum is that if you find something you don't like you ignore it and move on.

Someone created that thread on the premise that when Gene threads were created someone put in the title "BASHERS/HATERS STAY AWAY"

EDIT:

I find the title of this thread full of irony I will add.

Will someone please create a thread titled "Bashing bassists bashing other bassists on TB is lame"

Saying everyone is 'great' and having a warm and fuzzy outlook on EVERYTHING is lame as well.

Bashing is stupid I'll admit. Saying someone is great at what they do even if it doesn't move you is the way to go.

I'd rather scrape my eyes off than listen to KISS and Gene Simmons but the muthaf**** made it. Period. He is good..no, VERY good at what he does. 99% of people on here couldn't pull the gimmick off with any sort of sincerity that he does.

Is he Jaco...No. Does he want to be Jaco. No. He's serving a different dish. That's why McDonalds doesn't sell Steak..Not their market.

Carry on.

I have to agree as well. While the Gene S bashing thread had its moments of entertainment, they were not the bashing posts themselves. Also, it was a low form of "reality TV" type entertainment, maybe even lower, like rubber-necking at an accident, or perhaps even lower than that, like watching someone get executed (a favorite of people in times long gone by; thank goodness that's no longer generally accepted as something fun to do).

I agree, we should all refrain from bashing other people over their noggins with frying pans and the like. Heck, while we're at it, we should outlaw bashing of any kind, be it with a cricket bat, a steel gauntlet, a mace, a carp, or any other manner of bashing implement. All bashing should be considered impolite and uncouth in today's society. Except of course for cat bashing. Nothing like taking a live calico upside somebody's melon, that's just hilarious.

I don't think that is the point. We should be encouraging to each other no matter skill level, playing style or music style! Yeah, if you don't dig what your ears are hearing, then keep it moving!

Is it okay to say that what someone does, doesn't move you and elaborate why? I think there's a difference between creative debate and senseless bashing. It's part of the fun of discussion. Otherwise, we can all agree that everything is great, everyone is wonderful, every bass is terrific...and close up shop and go home.

What if they are a drunken idiot that broke your rig? Then is it ok? Cause this guy keeps busting my chops...

It's not like I did it on purpose!

Yeah of course man, it should just all be done with respect for one another, it's kinda' like the whole freedom of speech discussion. Some people just like to open their mouth and spit out all kinds of **** just to get a reaction. Senseless bashing is provocative and unconstructive (not implying that you don't agree on it).
