Last night I had the pleasure of watching Return to Forever in Seattle.
I've seen lots of band and lots of bassists over the years, but I think maybe Stanley Clarke is unique in that he is an awesome electric bass player, he does it all, does it well, and does it apparently effortlessly.
However when he put down his Alembic and picked up his upright bass things took a decidedly unreal turn.
He is without a doubt the most impressive upright bassist I've yet seen. Double stops lightning fast, chords, harmonics, flamenco style strums, percussive tapping and slapping of the bass, and incredibly fast single not solos.....all blended together along with lovely tone and amazing intonation.
What a treat...I think I'd love to see him do a concert on the upgright only...he really looks and sounds like he's having more fun on the upright!
And I am an ELECTRIC BASS PLAYER! WOW!!!
