If there was an 'official' Bass Hall Of Fame, and you could only nominate 3 bassists to get in on the first ballot, who would you pick? (upright or electric) |

But I think I'd have to go with "Thunderfingers" based on the sucess of The Who.
Or John Paul Jones of Led Zep

And if there were a 4th I'd say Squire for his huge part in defining bass within progressive rock.

No offense to McCartney. I love him. But even he will tell you that his playing is derivative -- i.e. inspired by Jamerson, etc. My three choices above are all innovators that inspired and continue to inspire. |

Ray, James and Jaco are THE top three, most innovative and influential modern bassists.

I am sad to say, I strongly dislike the guy and his music, But Jaco pastorius is also essential.
...And Larry Graham, for pionering slap. |

| | | | Because of the eras they were in, where the role of bass guitar really started expanding and the fact they were largely responsible for much of it, for 1st ballot I'd go with:
James Jamerson
Paul McCartney
Carol Kaye or John Entwistle |
