The Bass Lines of Sade

Sign in to disble this ad
Not sure who the bassist is...whoever it is deserves some major kudos...

I really love the smooth and sexy bass lines in most of her stuff. The bass really carries alot of the songs. For example:

"Hang On To Your Love"
"Smooth Operator"
"Is It A Crime"
"Paradise"
"No Ordinary Love"
"Kiss of Life"

Definately songs for "mommy & daddy time".

Some of the very first songs I ever learned how to play were from Sade! My teacher gave me Smooth Operator to learn and I can play it to this day. I think another was Is It A Crime. Great basslines.

+1 Musicman Stingray hung just under your chin & you have the look (See the Live Aid DVD for the visual) -- Apparently they have a new album out soon & Sade Aide still look beautiful in her mid 50's.

You need to checkout Sweetback. It was him and two other cats from Sade band members. They also produced Maxwell's earlier stuff.

I remember seeing them(on TV)playing live years ago; my wife say,'I think she does her bassplayer'
I said, 'What are you talkin about?'
She(Sade- not my wife )then proceeds to saunter(imagine THAT)on over to a deeply grooving Mr Denman and totally bows down to the man.
I was like, 'OK, then,

Absolutely!! Groove for miles and a sweeeet tone!! The first 3 records...Diamond Life, Promise and Stronger Than Pride are my favorites because they have no synth bass or programmed drums. It's all Paul grooving like nobodys business with Martin Ditcham or Dave Early on drums! The later stuff is good but too much programming, not enough playing for my taste.

Hopefully the new one will have more of the classic style.

"I'm a Paul Denman Wanna be!" is rhythm mnemonic I recently used to remember a bass like for an audition. I nailed it and got the gig!

Another great Urban R&B project I am on has "No Ordinary Love" on the set list. This is a problem for me because I LOVE IT SO SO SO!

Sade and Paul Denman make me gas for a 2 band EQ 1979 Stingray.

I love her...

Cool.

Boy oh boy, I saw this thread and then went to youtube. 40 minutes later I remembered I had this thread minimized on the tool bar. What a grooving bass.
I bow down to such rhythmic goodness.

Funnily enough, I've had to learn 'Smooth Operator' just this week to support a singer in a side project tonight...It's a nice bass line, and you even get a little fretless solo

When I got back into bass playing after a stint playing guitar for a long time, the first thing I did was to put a reminder in my notebook to rip my Sade CD collection into iTunes and start jamming to those songs.

Thats not a fretless
Maybe the chorus tricked you into that.

This tread needs some music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNtMK-7CaLQ

He's the one that got me into Stingrays.
