I have worked on some stuff. If you can play bass in a way that defines the chords and gives enough rhythmical accents, you can almost be a one-man band. But, to me, it can be really difficult to work all that out and sing at the same time. I have an idea to work up a set that way, but I don't know if I'll get that far.

Check out "me and my bass guitar" by Vic Wooten. I'm sure there's plenty more, but that's the first that comes to my mind.

I think there are quite a few. There are probably more guitarists that sing, because (and this is just my opinion) singing and playing guitar are more "spotlight" roles. But the ones I can think of off the top of my head include:

Geddy Lee (Rush)
Tom Araya (Slayer)
Gene Simmons (Kiss)
Paul McCartney (Beatles)
David Vincent (Morbid Angel)
Sting (The Police)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Bootsy Collins (Parliament/Funkadelic)
Pete Steel (Type-O-Negative)
Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)

There are probably a lot more, but that's what I can think of immediately. Looking at the list though, it makes me question something else... are there any women who play bass and sing?

Tom Araya can do something that might be called singing and playing his bass.

By the way, this doesn't belong in General Instruction. Bassists probably a better fit. Moving there now.

Melissa Auf der Maur! She was the bassist for Hole, back in the 90s, then replaced D'arcy in Smashing Pumpkins for their last tour back in '99 or '00. She's put out a few solo albums since, pretty good stuff. check out the song 'Followed the Waves'

plus, she's hot.

@ Daveh30 Thanks for the mention, another band I'm gonna start listening to ..

EDIT:
How could I forget Wolfgang Parker!? He plays bass for the Punk-Swing band of the same name.

On the topic of women who play bass and sing:

Emma Richardson from Band of Skulls

She's not bad-looking either, check out some videos of 'em on Youtube.

Charlotte Cooper from The Subways

Happens to the best of us man... and on that note, I listen to Own Pallet quite a bit and he makes great use of a violin and loop pedal. I've successfully mimicked some of his tunes and covers using a bass. Works well in my opinion.
