Bass Players We Haven't Heard Of

Sign in to disble this ad
I love to listen to Jaco as much as anyone on this site (particularly BSL) and know all about Chuck Rainey and Anthony Jackson. How about some players people might not have heard of?

I'll start. South African session maestro Bakithi Kumalo. Best know for playing with Paul Simon and Mickey Hart. Also does NAMM demos. Great player you might not have known otherwise.

Who's next?

I've heard of him! He played on Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al!" What a great, tasty bassline. Gonna listen right now

I can't really think of any bass players at the moment...

I saw him with her on Austin City Limits and thought if I could play bass like anybody it would be him (never had that thought before), and I don't really care for that kind of music. I tried to find a recording, but couldn't. He was all over the place without sounding like he was overplaying or being flashy. He might be my favorite bass player (I'll have to look for the Live in Vegas thing, thanks).

If we haven't heard of them, how can we say who they are? Just askin' ...

Great song, but he only played on tracks 1,2,5, and 7 on that album.

I'm optimistic about this thread though

Here's one bassist that few have heard of: Neal Fountain. Killer player and deserves of some serious praise on these forums. I've seen him with Bobby Lee Rodgers, Jimmy Herring (w/Sipe on drums), Megaphone Man and plenty of other groups. Google him when you get a chance.

He is up there as one of my favorites... His melodic selection and use of chords is amazing.

'Gigleoplexis' (w/Jonathan Townes,), 'Zomo', 'Suns Anvil' and 'This is Secret Music'(w/Jonathan Townes, Medeski, Sipe and Count mButu) are definite recordings to pick up... Also heard he plays bass and sometime guitar with Kenosha Kid. This cat is definitely a talented and an innovative thinking bassist.

My favorite bass player that not a lot of people probably know about is Jason Myers. He is in a band called Icarus Witch out of Pittsburg. Awesome bass player.

My favorite bass player that nobody's heard of is Matt Gruenberg. Back in the mid- to late-1980s he played in a band (with Reeves Gabrels) called Life On Earth, and it was like some totally in-yo-face blend of Mick Karn, Les Claypool, and Stanley Clarke, only really restrained and subtle at the same time.

In that case, mine would be the aptly named Bassist Not Appearing in this Thread.

Linley is crazy good... also a great keyboardist. There are some Youtube vids with him playing keys behind Hadrian Feraud's impro group in Paris.

Ellie Erriksson from Erase Errata. Awesome!

Check out any EE on you tube. Always plays a Jazz (75 RI?) - their material is very bass-heavy.

For any technical/progressive metal fans out there, definitely check out Dominic "Forest" Lapointe from the Canadian prog death band Augury. He loves his fretless 4 string and 6 string basses :P

Linley was also part of a group called Samabe. If you haven't already look them up on youtube or Myspace. It looked like the coolest project ever. But it looks like it dissolved. I have that HF album- it's terrific
