Bass as a Solo Intrument?

Sign in to disble this ad
YouTube - Jon Reshard-She's Always a Woman

I often see solo guitarists, pianists, even Sax players play by themselves in restaurants, cruise ships, malls, etc. and have thought maybe I could try to market myself that way. Jon Reshard proves here that Bass guitar can be recognized as a solo instrument.

Send a message via AIM to T-MOST
Stanley Clarke has toured solo. Victor Wooten certainly could do it also... as could several others.

One of Vic's first gigs in Nashville was playing solo bass at a Health Food Restaurant where he was a waiter. It wasn't long before all of Music Row was there listening....

really depends on who you are and what you can do...

This is where bass gear does make a difference.

I finger pick on bass quite a bit. I bought a super cheap Dean Playmate from Zzounds a few years ago and just started going all Bob Dylan and Matt Ward on the thing. Tuning down to D and clamping a capo on the third fret, I play a pretty wicked rendition of "Street Fighting Man" solo. I'll even open up and tune DADA with a slide, I got this idea after listening to Zep III, Jimmy Page was open tuning all over the place on that record.

Guitar is obviously a soloing or lead instrument - to me the strength of bass is subtle, it will always be that way, it's the real beauty and power of the instrument.

It's true more people should appreciate the bass, but I am kind of tired of bassists trying to be like guitarists and trying to get limelight.

To me someone like Aston Barrett is worth a thousand noodlers.

Just my opinion, - if I want to solo I pick up a more suitable instrument with a wider range that operates more around the frequencies people can easily hear, like a guitar..

A 5 with a high C string is a good range to take things out of the register, good for adapting tunes and more op's for chords in a more transparent range, working on right hand picking combinations keeps things flowing, I'm not so much of a fan of too much tap stuff, more independent picking.

Would you call the genius of Michael Manring "noodling"?

There is always the possibility of using effects and using speakers that have more presence in the 1-3k Hz bracket (like PA speakers). Just look at bands like lightning bolt, Double Dagger, and Death From Above 1979. They do a wonderful job of making the bass a lead instrument. If what you are playing is catchy enough, most people wont care. In fact you might even get more attention because people just aren't use to seeing a bass played by its self.
