Bassist for "The Boxtops"

Yea I know this sounds kind of lame, but I was listening to a "golden oldies" station and was just floored by the bassline to "Cry Like A Baby" by the "Boxtops".

Any bassist could really go to school listening to this bassline. I had no idea bassists were so good way back then.

Thoughts?

Love the bass in that song but it's more than likely a studio musician. A common practice the label insisted on that the band really resented.

*edit* The band did play on their biggest hit "The Letter" and all live performances. Bassist Bill Cunningham went on to earn a master's degree in music and a spot on the White House orchestra. He changed careers later on. His dad played percussion on Elvis Presley's first records.

Like the Mcoys, the Box Tops were very young when they cut those hits, I think singer Alex Chilton was only 16.

What a great tune. Oldies are definately good to learn for basic pre-funk bass lines.
