most of the open mic nights I have been to always have singer/songwriter types, james taylor wannabees.wouldnt it be cool to have about a dozen bass players show up? If you live in the hudson valley,ny and want to try this let me know.or let me know what you think of this idea.

One drummer later, you've got a band. Don't get me wrong, been playing bass over 35 yrs, but going to a show with nothing but bass players ain't much of a show. Not that solo bass can't be fantastic, either. Well, I think you get the idea.

Then about 5 or 6 more showed up and when the house band got through their opener they started calling folks up. I got skipped once, then again so I headed out the door. Went to another place down the street that was short of bass guys that night (DUH!!) and I got to play a bunch! I think getting a bunch of bass players to show up at the open mich is not such a great idea. Neither is posting this in the basses section but oh well!! |

I would have been cracking up if I'd heard you play that version of My Generation live. | Thanks. In fact, "House of the Rising Sun" is the tune I originally learned for "Amazing Grace". I leanred the original version about two years later. The re-write of "My Generation" is supposed to be from the POV of a retired old fart, which I am.
You shouldhear my version of "Whiskey Man".
I was at one coffee house where the host kept putting me off. When I asked about it, he said he was waiting for the rest of my act. I had to tell him that I was it. Quote: |

This all started when I went ot an open mic to hear some of my friends and was greeted with, "Where's your bass?". I brought it two weeks later, but had no idea what I would do with it because I had no idea how t omake up bass lines on the fly. When I was asked if I had anything, I went home, got tabs for "Boris the Spider" and off I went.

| | | You can show up and become the house bassist for the whole night.
I play with singer songwriters and find that is really exercises my chops, timing etc. They sometimes ask me why I play with them when they hear my other bands. They find it unusual that one would go outside of one's genre. |

Um, I will not ever go to an open mic night again, on purpose. Too many ovulating, emlightened men (douchebags) with an acoustic guitar warbling some **** about lost love or how sensitive they are towards the plight of women....Honestly these "men" should be tied to a chair and have their own music played at therm till they piss their pants and promise never to do it again!
Well, I might go if like 10 or 12 bass players got up on stage at once, all basses in hand and did "Big Bottom" from Spinal Tap.....

i'll move it there presently.
