Bassist make or break a band?

Sign in to disble this ad
Being bassists I wonder if you all share my feelings on this particular subject.
Can a bassist make or break a band for you?
Will a bassist alone make you like a band?
I myself have never that I can think of liked a band solely or even mainly for that matter because of the(ir) bassist.

No, I really don't listen to music for the bass, a good bass player is just a bonus. I love the White Stripes and they don't even have bass in a lot of their tunes!

Well I guess in that respect you'd be correct. But I think you interpreted this differently than I saw it in my mind.
What I meant is...
Has a bassist ALONE ever made you like a band?

I (if I'm honest) only really like Ian Dury and the Blockheads stuff because of Norman Watt-roys bass playing.

I remember thinking on more than one occasion that a bass player or their bass tone has ruined a band for me.
Certainly when I play live I feel that if I play bad or sound bad then surely it can't sound good in the crowd.

Drummers and singers make or break bands.

I always thought that if the bass player isn't holding up his end of the job then he and the drummer wont be clicking and that will have a devastating effect on the overall feel of the songs.

Pretty sure this is my stance as well. At least in the live performance spectrum.
I'm fairly certain a band can have a recording with underwhelming bass and I could still like it a lot.

If the band sucks then just adding a good bassist won't help. But a good band with a bad bassist will suck.

60% Drummer
40% Bassist.
It's all about the groove.
A good drummer can hide a bad bass player. ( a little)
But a good bass player can't hide a bad drummer.
People (non-musicians) are programed to hear singers, and drummers first.

Ive been known to listen to tunes of artists/bands that I don't like just because I like the bass part. I also am more apt to pay attention if a band has an interesting bassist or bass parts.

If the band has a bad bassist I don't listen to them.

I agree 100%. I mean if the whole band is great, then great. But a good or bad drummer has the most impact on a band. A singer has to either be good, or interesting.

That's an interesting question. I've only been playing < 1 year but I can tell you that since I have I listen to all music differently. Partly because I've got the bass jacked up on my mp3 player (Cowon S9 rules, btw). But in paying attention to it more, I do appreciate interesting players a lot more.

The "lead bass" guys like Geddy, Claypool are different. But I'd say, mostly, a good bassist is more of a bonus.

BUT, would Zeppelin or the Who or the Beatles been what they were with a guy riding the root? Of course not.
