Bassist on tour with Israel & New Breed?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone ID this cat? He was in Toronto last night with Israel & New Breed:

Doesn't look like Terrance Palmer, who I thought was the regular guy that toured with Israel.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised they mixed his MTD fairly well, with the thunderous lows and sparkly high end clearly audible through the mix. He was ripping it up all night and want more info...!

Thats Justin "Rafiki" Raines, an amazing bassist. One of my all time favorites to study and listen to.

I met him at NAMM 08. What's really scary about this guy is that he is also a great drummer.

That's Justin all right. I didn't know he doubled as a drummer. I agree the man's talented and has some serious chops all the way around. I wouldn't mind it if he taught me a thing or two about either instrument. His bass playing makes me want to use my bass like a coffee table...I can't play like that at all...

J/K..I am thankful for what I can do. Whether I suck or not!

I don't what it is but the church breeds some amazing musicians! I was briefly in a band with a guy who played keys, drums, guitar and bass all equally, amazingly well!

Tommy Sims played all bass parts on Israel's new CD. Saw an interview with Justin talking about learning all the parts for the tour.

Ummm... I have played with some people in church settings that definitely bring the average back down to normal, at best.

Noted. Same deal with me. I have been on worship platforms with some of the best players in my region on their respective instruments. And then other times.... well...

No question that in larger urban markets, some of the best players around can be seen in church bands on a regular basis. Especially drummers and bassists, IME. In smaller markets like mine, OTOH, the talent level is a lot more hit-and-miss. Lots of worship leaders doing the best they can with whoever they can get on the stage on a Sunday morning, and volunteers at that a lot more often than not.

Israel's bassists usually seem to get good love in the mix. It's nice to see.

Yep, I can attest to this. I think it's high time to get some of these young fellas in church some lessons and let them blossom into guys like Justin. I know 2-3 kids in my church just waiting to take their place when they're old enough.

I've heard of some churches where they are doing exactly this... providing instruction to younger instrumentalists and singers, often at a greatly reduced rate or even free which is a huge draw considering music lessons are an unaffordable "luxury" for many families and especially in today's economy. My church tried to do this for a little while but for a variety of reasons we just couldn't keep it going. You really have to people who are drop-dead committed to a program like that to really make it work, so I give huge props to anyone who has been able to do so.

I was glad to hear that.

There's nothing more disappointing than trying to hear serious gospel chops on an MTD or Smith mixed into a formless, subsonic mush.

Thanks for the name. So it was Raines. It seems he's lost the dreads now, though unlike Samson, this brotha still had groove for days!
