A lot of times when a band deviates from Standard, they tend to shift tunings back and forth. Sometimes, it even varies by band member (For example, in my band, I play in Drop-A [AEADG], the Rhythm Guitarist plays in Drop-D [DADGBE], and the Lead Guitarist plays in D Standard [DGCFAD]).

Fretting your B string on the 3rd fret while skipping the E to strike your A or moving up your neck to play the E is going to be next to impossible.

I'm pretty sure most of Opeth's stuff is just in E standard. Unless by "a lot" you just meant a few songs over many albums rather than majority. It might just be the way I read it.

Just like everyone said, any given Tool, or RATM songs are likely drop D. That's how they play that main riff from Freedom without a position shift in the middle of the riff. |

Most Drop D songs can be played on a 5-string, just have to use the brain a bit. You will be a better player for it.
As a bonus, you also get 3 extra notes... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
