Sad but True by Metallica is in Drop-D as well. Both are pretty famous.

Alot of metal/hard rock/grunge is in Drop-D -Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Silverchair, Metallica, Pantera, Godsmack, Rage Against the Machine to name a few, it really varies by song. A lot of times when a band deviates from Standard, they tend to shift tunings back and forth. Sometimes, it even varies by band member (For example, in my band, I play in Drop-A [AEADG], the Rhythm Guitarist plays in Drop-D [DADGBE], and the Lead Guitarist plays in D Standard [DGCFAD]).

A 5er isn't going to fix the issue if you are playing anything that may "ride" the open D and have notes being quickly fretted on the A. Fretting your B string on the 3rd fret while skipping the E to strike your A or moving up your neck to play the E is going to be next to impossible.

Gojira guitarists play drop D. But the bassist is smart and just uses a 5 string. To the above comment. I'm pretty sure most of Opeth's stuff is just in E standard. Unless by "a lot" you just meant a few songs over many albums rather than majority. It might just be the way I read it.

I'm smart and play in D standard :^) it's easier to play then drop D.

Just like everyone said, any given Tool, or RATM songs are likely drop D. That's how they play that main riff from Freedom without a position shift in the middle of the riff.

Does this mean the songs are titled "Rage Against The Machine", or that the band came up with the titles themselves?

Go for the 5

Most Drop D songs can be played on a 5-string, just have to use the brain a bit. You will be a better player for it.

As a bonus, you also get 3 extra notes...
