Bassists with Cerebral Palsy club

Sign in to disble this ad
I think there should be a bassists with Cerebral Palsy club so that if there's anyone besides me who has it, we can use eachother for inspiration and share stories about how it has affected our playing.

I have a mild/moderate form of it that affects my left side as a whole, weakening my fretting hand and limiting mobility/independent movement of fingers on that hand.

Anyone else?

Spastic Diplegia here, so mild-to-moderate below the waist but otherwise pretty good with both gross and fine motor control in the upper body and therefore my playing. I'm no Jaco/John Myung/Insert Your bass God *here* but I'm pretty sure that from lack of concrete practicing & lessions than anything else.

#2 ( ) and I think there are at least a few others out there, but a "Disabled Bassists Club" as far less of a limiting group might be better in the long run.

My grandfather was a bassist most of his adult life, but when he began showing signs of PSP he couldnt play anymore. He and his bass is the reason I'm a musician today.
RIP John Norman.

If we can do a disabled bassists club, count me in...radial club hand, foreshortened rigth arm; "flying thumb" on the left.

You're only limited by what your mind convinces you you can't do!

I second that. My parents both have cerebral palsy (dad passed away in 2005), mom's been in a wheelchair her whole life.

i have CP almost exactly like the OP, except there is almost NO independent dexterity between the fingers on my left hand. it's really bothered me most of my life, the fact that what i wanted to do most (play guitar) was compromised right from the get go. I can't form ANY chords with my left hand. so, i had to resort to playing lefty, so my left hand could hold the pick (which it can, fairly well). it's a strange thing to fret with the VASTLY dominant hand, it has to 'wait' for the picking hand. i'm sure it's usually the exact opposite. at some point i developed an interest in playing bass, for one because the spacing of the strings is much more comfortable, and for two because Paul McCartney is a god. i've just acquired my new Birdsong bass, and as far as things go, i couldn't be happier. it's truly the nicest instrument i've ever seen and/or owned. play on playas.

+1. That's the definition of true passion. I applaud those who overcome the odds and fight to the finish. God Bless.
