im wondering what other bands where you can actually hear the bass instead of just 'feeling' it? cause sometimes when listen to most death metal stuff or blink182 esque pop punk or 80s hair metal the bass is simply buried in the mix so much u cant actually hear it....so yea
the first time, i listened to dance of eternity and ytse jam by dream theater(before i started playin bass) i didnt even notice the bass solo. |

Justin Chancellor (Tool) also usually has very noticeable lines.

These guys have certain tracks where the bass takes a less prominent role, but just as many if not more of their songs showcase a more upfront bass sound:
Stefan Lessard / Dave Matthews Band
P-Nut / 311
Tad Kinchla / Blues Traveler
Dave Schools / Widespread Panic

Or bass in general. A lot of 80s metal producers thought bass was pointless, so removed it from the mix. Thus, a lot of 80s metal sounds awful.
It also has to do with YOUR tonal choice. A lot of bassists you can't hear well in the mix on CD sound amazingly boomy (in a good way) live or even with a subwoofer.
The key is finding the tonal space your guitarists (and other instrumentalists) don't occupy, and getting in there a bit. If your guitarist has really bassy tone, add some mids and highs. Tinny tone? Some really bass bass will make everything sound great. Etc.

im gonna add that the bassist from 'cake' has a nice finger tone that cuts thru pretty well. maybe its because their guitarist dont use much distortion |

Remember, live bass and recorded bass can sound vastly different in the mix. My jazz doesn't really do it well for me in the studio, but it sure rocks live. On the other hand, I wouldn't even go near a studio without my Precision!

Yeah you mentioned Dream Theatre, john myung's tone is such a waste of his talent. | Myung's recorded tone is a lot better on Train Of Thought and Octavarium, since he switched to the new signature bass. It's still compressed to hell though, although it's not all that surprising when the huge sonic egos of Petrucci, Rudess and Portnoy fill up 90% of the sonic space. |

| | | | Yeah I feel sorry for Mr. Myung. I've serious spent lots of time TRYING my hardest to hear him, and I just can't. I can usually hear some kind of bass at least somewhere in a recording, but in DT, I just can't.
Roger Waters
Maybe not really cutting tone, but the bass was mixed high on a good amount of floyd albums, and they sound really good cause of it.
(sorry I don't know his name)
The guy who plays/played for electric wizard.
