Bassists that draw the most jealousy.

Sting. I never understood this one, I guess it's because he's pretentious? World class musician either way.

Gene Simmons. Everyone bags on the dude because he "can't play." Like Kiss tunes would be improved by virtuoso bass performances. Besides, those of us who have actually listened know the guy can play.

Mark Hoppus. Oddly, Hoppus hate seems to have curbed a bit now that he's gotten more known as a media personality. Flat out, the guy can play. I think most people based their hate on the fact that young people like his band and he was on MTV.

Pete Wentz. Yeah, he's a bit obnoxious and he's not going to win any bassist of the year awards. That wasn't the point of Fall Out Boy and their music wasn't geared towards "old folks" or musicians. They were fun live and had good pop songs.

Bassists that draw the most jealousy seem to be ones perceived by the envious as not having "paid enough dues" to be in a current position of money, fame, interviews, hype, whatever. And of course any pretty bassist will be hated, regardless of gender or orientation.
But take heart! You will ALL be hated at some point by someone who resents you taking "their" rightful space on stage.

I'm more jealous of the virtuosos than the monetarily successful. I know it's mostly a matter of practice, but I wish I had that undying drive and dedication to the craft when I was starting out.

Hell anyone can get lucky and become rich and famous.

I think it was Eric Clapton years ago when asked in an interview,"how it felt to be the greatest guitarist of all time"? Clapton replied "It would be quite ignorant of me to think of myself as the greatest; there is probably someone on a front porch, or some unkown club at the moment who can play me into the ground. I was just at the right place at the right time".
My opinion; life is to short to be jealous. Besides could jealousy also be hidden envy???

I'm jealous of Victor and Hamm and Bailey and all those amazing players I've seen... as a fan of technical metal I'm a big fan of what Evan Brewer does, too...

I'm jealous of any root note bassist that makes tons of money, of course, too. But that's for different reasons.

Judging from recent threads, Michael Anthony and Adam Clayton.

I'm more envious of very good technical player ... I think of Victor Wooten, Alain Caron, Steve Bailey or many classical double bass player like Joel Quarrington or my last double bass teacher Zbignew Borowicz.

Dudes like Sting, Mark Hopus, Pete Wentz and Gene Simmons ... it is sometimes frustrating that anyone with one year of practicing could play what they do but those guys earn a lot more of money than guy like Victor Wooten who outplay them to a point it isn't funny.

So, the less good you are technicaly, the better your chances are to make pop music that will give you a lot of money.

In lies the problem. Most who have an issue with say the musicians the OP used have more of a problem with thier success and getting it with being a simple bassit or player..but whats wrong with that? When did being a super chop bassit really matter in most music?

Instead of being jealous of these players success find out how they got to were they are and then find in yourself what it really could take for you to get there. Build your skills instead of downing those who have found fame/wealth plunking roots when you feel you can outplay them. Its not always about skill, can be luck, marketing, timing and who you know that gets the big gig.

This may actually be a fair point. The majority of people on the planet are not technically proficient at music. There may be a certain broad appeal to music that ****in ROCKS!! as opposed to music that is technically perfect.

I know when I look at a kick ass sports car, I think "Wow! That thing looks SWEET!" Rather than "Wow! With a profile like that and the radius on the front end, this baby must have a drag coefficient approaching zero!"

I dunno from art, I just know what I like.

I'm guessing a lot of people have issues with Sting's post Police-era work because it's not (as) rock based. Personally I don't care for his solo albums at all, especially the later day adult contemporary stuff, but will be the first to say he's still an excellent musician.

Sting IMO is an excellent musician.

Hoppus, Wentz, and Simmons on the other hand. . .

I feel like they attract the dislike that they do because they are some of the more well known bass players out there, while many bassists that I've heard on this forum alone are much better musicians, let alone the Wootens and Jamersons of this world, who get almost no attention for their musicianship.

By the way, where is Noseferatu?

I'd say it's more like lots of people could practise hard and become a technical monster, but few have the looks, presence, extroversion and good fortune to reach and appeal to a mass audience.

None of these guys are known for being bass players, they're known for being the most prominent frontman within their group.

I'm jealous of marcus miller, vic wooten, and sean malone for their playing skills.

Though I'm not jealous of bassists that were in a right band/right time kind of thing, and went on to make millions. Good for them.

Haters hate. I guess I just don't care enough.

It is all about the whole package. And don't forget songwriting; like them or not, "Rock and Roll All Nite", "Feeling This", "Sugar, We're Going Down", and "Don't Stand So Close To Me" are catchier than anything ever written by VictorStuBaileyBerlinetc.
