Jon Sauter-(played bass with Ted Nugent) was the first guy I saw with one. He had a modified strat whammy (with screen-door spings) on his Tele-basses. This was in the early or mid 70's.

I believe Tim Cummerford at one time used a whammy bar on his bass.

my brother on his frankenbass, it isn't pretty, but it kicks ass. i'll have to find a picture of it. he took a chisel and routed out the space for it.

I have a bass with one but I don't use it much anymore. The bass it's on is pretty heavy. One very useful thing I've found for it is to do psuedo-fretless. I got the idea to do that from a guitarist who used a whammy bar to simulate slide guitar. It wouldn't fool Steve Bailey but it works.

John Lennon on "Let It Be". You have to play it backwards to hear the dive bombing stuff.
