I was at Langerado Music Festival two weekends ago. Big Cyprus Seminole Reservation, Florida. Great vibes, lots of music, good time.
Just for the record, I wanted to share that virtually every bass player was running an SVT and 810. With the exception of Chris Wood from Medeski, Martin & Wood (Hartke 410/115) and Aston Barret with the Wailers (Eden WT 800 (2) and Ampeg 410 and 115 (2 each)). Also the guy that subbed for Hubbard in The Roots, was playing an Eden Navi and 410/115 combo.
But I saw lots of acts, and that classic backline 8 by 10 was everywhere. So is it just the ultimate reliability for large venue performance? I understand it's been around for ever, and nothing moves air like a stack of 10 inch cones...etc... I'm just still amazed that it's so ubiquitous in the professional music circuit.

I found out The Roots bass player Leonard Hubbard is no longer with the band. Producer and bassist Owen Biddle who did some tracks on their album The Game Theory, is now touring with them. and a correction to his gear- 410xlt and an 18 not a 15. (my setup...can't wait for my eden wt to arrive..) Also plays Callowhill basses. |

All rental companies has them, and most bassist ask for them when renting, because they know how they will sound, and they know the rental company has them. It's either that, or a G-K 800 with Hartke 4x10s
It's just one of those things that become standard in the industry, like Fender Twins for guitars, Yamaha Motif for keys, etc.
I personally love it when I play a festival and they have an Ampeg stack. I did a tour once where somehow they specified SWR amps for me, and I thought they were awful, night after night.
Also, keep in mind that in those big festivals, most everything is rented, and setup for a quick turn around between bands. Chris Wood usually plays with a vintage Ampeg, so likely he was just using the stage's rig that day.

| | | | Bass amps I've given a lot of thought to which amp to use, and have recently come to a surprising conclusion (given that I'm in one of the loudest, if not the loudest, bands in the world). I've foregone the whole full-stack approach and have been using an Ampeg Rocket B-100R (tweeterless, 100 watt, Solid State, combo) for over a month now.
On the few shows we've played where something else has been backlined, I've come to miss the projection, focus, and intuitive tweakability of the Rocket amp. We've been setting it up on top of a road case, so it's close to chest level, and have been miking the cone near the center with a (I believe it's a Shure) clip-on-tom type mic. |

I really dug the last track. The breakdown/guitar-bass interchange was nice. It sounded improvised and tasty. I hope to see you live soon Owen.

I know the house PA at Roots shows is going to be top notch, but 100 solid state watts still catch me by surprise.
What am I missing, because I feel like my Eden stack is imperative right now..to really get the bass buzzing & rattling | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
