Bassists In Recovery Group

After seeing so many musicians die from addiction and alcoholism I thought that starting a bassists in recovery group might be a good idea. Any of you TB'ers that are in recovery that care to, please join. Maybe we can help someone here that is struggling.

Sign me up, 7 years of recovery time, but the time that really counts is when I woke up this morning.

Right on, Brother. It's been 10 years since I used and about 10 seconds since I've had an addictive thought. Maybe we can help someone.

It's fine, as long as we keep our specific fellowships anonymous. That way we aren't specifically representing.

True that! Forever teachable...
Now as far as G.A.S. goes...day 1 all over again.
On a serious note...I really thought I'd never play again or be inspired again...sad. My love of music never left, in fact it was my salvation period.

Always GASing, but rarely act on it...
I'm thankful today that I can enjoy being human and the creative part of myself. I was scared to play for a while but am much better now.

The sig was for humor and humility......... besides, it keeps me in check, but i'll make it disappear.

Hey guys, within the wake of all the people we look up to, admire, and friends and loved ones we have lost to this, thanks for starting the thread.

I haven't used in over 5 years I think, it seems like forever but really isn't that long. Its always there and I have replaced music and addiction to just a music addiction.

Hopefully this thread can help some people.

How many of you guys that quit drinking find it difficult after years of sobriety to be either in a bar or reherasal with a bunch of drunks?

Hey I am in as well. This is cool.....I noticed there was a thread about a recent death of the bass player in Slipnot...some people still look at this disease like it is a moral deficiency...not a progressive, incurable and life threatening and often fatal illness. It can, however, be arrested (and so can I when I use) one day at a time.

Became a supporting member yesterday. Time to give a little back. One of my favorite places on the interweb to hang out and learn stuff.
June 16, 2008 sober. Bars and drunks make it tough. There're only so many coffee-house gigs to go around..

I don't find it difficult at all now but it took a while to get there. I just don't hang out as long as I used to. If the venue has higher end non-alcohilic beer I will definitely have a couple. If not it's Red Bulls and water. I treat it as my profession, like any other. I'm there to play and have fun and earn my play not get f'd up (can I say that?) There's not much romance there for me anymore. 90% of my gigs are contracted where drinking is prohibited anyway.
As far as band mates and other musicians go...I pick accordingly. I don't care what anyone does (this is my issue not there's) as long as they perform (like any other job) as expected otherwise I have zero tolerance.

I have an great-uncle who used to be severely alcoholic and is ow sober and living next-door with my grandparents. He makes sure to tell us {me, my bro, and sis) to stay sober/drug free and that he isn't proud of what he had done in his past. I hope that these testimonies will affect some young person like my great-uncle affected me... to never be addicted/alcoholic.

I also realize that many times, alcoholism and addiction is "hereditary." Most people who suffer from it are merely following their parents or friends and often drink heavily or use drugs to help with depression... so for you all to overcome whatever it is that caused to want drugs/heavy drinking in the first place... my hat's off to you

23 years now for me. My 30th birthday was my last party. Hang in there people. I don't even remember what it was like or how bad the want was. I do know that I cannt go back & don't want to. It DOES get easier, but never easy

November 2006, it took moving and getting a whole new set of friends to get myself back on track but I've only slipped once in nearly four years. I still keep an eye out for the Jazz I hocked right there at the end...

Just over 9 years. It's still a little hard to believe who I once was compared to today.
