I want to hear bassists that take a lot of solos. Now I know in jazz there are some instances in which bassists take solos, but I'm thinking more in the genre of metal or rock.
Are there any bassists who do this? Or do none of them exist? |

Check out John Entwistle as well, some great "lead bass playing". Metal I'm not too hot on, but there's no reason why you can't transcribe some of those guitar solo's for bass, it'll be great practice.

| | | | I saw that. I mean sort of in a band context, that's what I mean by "like a guitar" like in the context of a jam or something. |

edit:
I meant like a regular shred solo, it sounds a bit muddy. but short solo runs and such can be nice, and John Entwistle didnt realy solo much in the band context, he just made a VERY active bassline live sometimes
Check out Motorhead, i think one song where Lemmy takes the place of the guitar solo is called "Lost in the Ozone" or something like that.

The Call of Ktulu has some very guitar-like fills (you just have to listen hard to hear them. And Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) is an amazing bass solo. Check out some of his live solo's on youtube. |

| | | | cliff burton towards the end of Orion. That extended slo bridge....he does a solo at the very very end and for years I thought it was a guitar until I found out it was a bass. He even said once in an interview "it sounds like a guitar and noone will ever notice the difference unless they really listen."

He actually recorded the leads through a real, live, glowing Marshall stack. Said it gave him chills! |

come to my myspace page. listen to DIME in the middle i have a tap then finger solo
and then if you listen to atmas heave, i have tapping in every chorus, and then a slap bass solo towards the mid- end b4 the main guitar solo.
also on the album i probably have solos in 7 of the 11 tracks that are songs. ( 2 other tracks are intro and outro , with no bass) |

Bassists take solos all over the place. Look at Mark King, he does it all the time in a pop/fusion context! |

The album is a good showcase of guitar, drums, and bass. John and Joey do a lot of trading off on solos. Amazing album.

Thats all Hooky did, was take the guitarists space, but in a bass sounding way- not trying to be a guitarist, but certainly not the bass part either.
One of the most original and overlooked bass players ever
he showed you don't have to be a shredder to be better. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
