bassists that use chords/strum

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been fooling around with them a lot lately and having heard Flea's strumming and chord use on SA as well as older albums, I have been interested as to some other prominent bassists that do this. Any genre.

I like how flea uses chords if that helps a little.

Dont know about recently, but I saw los lonely boys before they made it huge and on the record, they have a B3 player, but live they didnt and I think they still dont, but anyways their bass player filled in the space by playing chords without sacrificing the bass line in anyway! he was pretty sick

Check out Matthew Garrison's Groove Tune. Then Richard Bona plays chords quite a bit. Victor Wooten throws in chords. I'm talking bigger than double-stops.

In general you need to play chords up the neck on bass or they get too muddy. Stanley Clarke played chords low down the neck, but he was playing a tenor bass most the time. Down the neck playing 10ths can sound good.

If you wanna hear some mad soloing with chords, check out Abe Laboriel Sr. You can go to www.GregMathieson.com and buy the Jazz Ministry CD called LIVE AT THE BAKED POTATO.

I've seen them perform live many times and they're absolutely amazing!! It's on their older cd its Mike Landau on guitar, Abe Laboriel Sr on Bass, Greg Mathieson on keys, and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. On their newer album its all the same except for the drummer is now Abe Laboriel Jr instead of Vinnie.

It's an amazing cd with awesome musicianship and great tunes! I listen to mine every day, its a 2 cd set!

And don't forget Colin Hodgkinson of Back Door, a MAJOR pioneer! Stanley Clarke really dug his playing!

Strumming is a regular component of Michael Manring's playing.

Les Claypool comes to mind. It's rather basic too, so give it a try.

"Too Many Puppies" for example.

Have I really read through this whole thread and not seen the name Jonas Hellborg once?

He's an amazing strummer, and his fluency with chords is amazing. I have his book Chord Bassics (I also have Thumb Bassics), it contains over 500 chord fingerings. At £1.59 it was a steal!
