I developed 3 fingers without trying. It came naturally. using my pinky takes conscious thought. Originally being a drummer, I tend to you my hands in any way I can. also use palm and fingers in a flamenco style.

Percy Jones + his thumb
The theory behind using three fingers is to always go to the next string with your longer finger witch is your middle finger. The way it works "in short" is if you are playing a C major scale you would play the first note"C" with your index finger, the second note "D" with your ring finger then when you move to the "E" on the D string with your middle finger.

With a Minor scale "lets say C again" you would play the "C" with your middle finger then the "D" with your index finger and the "E Flat" with you ring finger. When you move up to the "F" on the next string "The D String" you are starting with your middle finger again.

Take a look at this

I'm suprised no-one's mentioned Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. I don't play much upright but his playing inspired me to adopt the 3 finger style.

Just do a youtube search

I use 3+thumb. Three fingers makes fast triplets way easy. It pisses off the guitards because they can't pick triplets as fast as I can play them. They're faster with straight tremolo picking, but hey, can't win em all!

Try playing along with Bleed by Meshuggah. Awesome triplet training.

The master Percy Jones has a 3 finger technique. He demonstrates it on an old instruction video he did called Bass Exploration.

My technique is more like 3 fisted.

I use 3 and 4 finger techniques, depending what I have to play.

I started out just using my index finger.

Now I finger-pluck with three fingers.

And use my thumb for double strokes. (nail too)

I occasionally play with three. I do it for efficiency, but I can't say exactly when I do and when I don't. I do it without thinking about it. In fact, i never realized I played with three until a guitarist asked me why I was playing with three fingers.

Yeah, 3 fingers, 3-2-1-3-2-1. oh, and thumb when i slap, or play muted. when I slap I'm using 1-2-3 for fast ghost-note like stuff.
There are things, which are easyer, and things more difficult with three fingers.
