The theory behind using three fingers is to always go to the next string with your longer finger witch is your middle finger. The way it works "in short" is if you are playing a C major scale you would play the first note"C" with your index finger, the second note "D" with your ring finger then when you move to the "E" on the D string with your middle finger.
With a Minor scale "lets say C again" you would play the "C" with your middle finger then the "D" with your index finger and the "E Flat" with you ring finger. When you move up to the "F" on the next string "The D String" you are starting with your middle finger again.

Just do a youtube search

Try playing along with Bleed by Meshuggah. Awesome triplet training.

My technique is more like 3 fisted. |

I started out just using my index finger.
Now I finger-pluck with three fingers.
And use my thumb for double strokes. (nail too) |

I do it without thinking about it. In fact, i never realized I played with three until a guitarist asked me why I was playing with three fingers.

| | | | Yeah, 3 fingers, 3-2-1-3-2-1. oh, and thumb when i slap, or play muted. when I slap I'm using 1-2-3 for fast ghost-note like stuff.
There are things, which are easyer, and things more difficult with three fingers.
