Add me too. It never occurred to me to try a bass left-handed even though I can tap a rhythm with my left better than my right! I always had trouble with piano because I'd have to let my right hand do whatever while I concentrated on the left hand. With a guitar, this isn't an issue: it actually plays to my strengths.

I guess my brain must have learnt a lot from playing right-handed - hasn't hurt my sense of rhythm. Sometimes I wonder if I would have sung and played better if I'd learnt left-handed playing.

Hi. I'm a righty but I just wanted to say this. When I first started out on the bass, I actually felt that playing lefties was more comfortable. I stuck with righty basses though, and now they feel natural to me, while lefthanded ones feel awkward. So I guess what matters is which one we learn on and get accustomed to.

@ Darren Low: Totally agree. Thought I'd have to play lefty, but after some minutes trying a righty guitar it felt normal.

On to our 300th member; who will it be?

I'm in that club. never really thought about playing a lefty bass. I'm glad, because you're limited then in your options. plus left hand does more stretching around so I actually think its easier for me to play righty. I'm strictly left handed except for a few things- bass, drums, and hockey. lol.

not so fast brah!! im a righty too who also plays lefty bass/gtr, so you have an ally. i had two teachers early on that both tried to get me to play right-handed, and even though i had progress it felt awkward. im glad i had sence enough to ditch those instructors and went my own way. its rough but im gittin it.

Count me in; I'm a lefty who chose to play right-handed because of the greater, cheaper instrument options.

I second this.....plus left handed basses look strange, i know its exactly the same bass but just looks too weird.

Hi! I'm in. What a great thread! I do everything with the left hand except for throwing a frisbee, and cutting paper with scissors. My dad got me a right-handed bass (Univox) when I was in high school. Both he and the salesman suggested that I might want to try a left-handed instrument, but I really liked this particular guitar. For a long time I was concerned about this choice, particularly as far as the slower speed of my right hand. My teacher, however, was very supportive, as the left-hand has a speed advantage on the fret-board. I've found that learning how to relax the right hand has helped with increasing speed.

Happy Holidays.

Anthony

First post, long time reader. I am a left handed person who does everything left-handed except shift a car and play bass. When I was young, I would air guitar left handed and asked for one at the music store when I was ready to start. The clerk told me they were over by the left handed pianos and trumpets. He told me that he was left handed and hated the limitations he went through when looking for instruments.

I thank him so much for pointing me in the direction of playing the way most people do. So please, count me in.

Count me in. Born left handed but forced to write with the right hand and after being teased a lot as a kid I forced my right hand to do a lot of what my left does. So I write with my right hand NEAT....but I write more comfortable with my left...it's just not as neat. I can now shoot hoops, eat with dining utensils, write, etc.,....with both hands. But I'm more comfortable with my left. However, I just naturally picked up the right handed bass without thinking about looking for a left handed bass.

Interesting, what's the trick to that Anthony? I occasionally get a "dyslexia" between my hands when my left thinks too quick for my right (eg that quick run up lick in Turn Me Loose, I'm Dr Feelgood by James Brown), and the result is a "stutter". Improving my right hand technique has been a priority since I started using a 5-string regularly, I've got the floating thumb working but the speed needs help.

[first post!]

I'm a lefty everywhere else, but play RH bass. No major problems on the fretboard, but sometimes my right had can't keep up on the strings... Still practicing!

You guys are nuts! I'm left handed, but do everything but write with my right hand. I tried learning on a right handed instrument in the beginning and it just wouldn't take. As soon as I got a lefty that all changed and became so much easier. A part of me wishes I powered through and stuck with righty though.
