Bassists who play well, but also dance around lot...

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm curious what members here think about this..

I've noticed that when I play, I tend to do the "Entwistle" wall flower thing and just kind of hang back, tap the foot maybe a little, but that's the extent of it. I don't honestly think I can run around and dance, while keeping it clean and on time like some I've seen...

Names that come to mind are Gene Simmons and Verdine White .. but especially the latter since he's so talented also as a bassist.. I've seen him literally running around the stage and jumping up and down, doing backing vocals with a remote mike hanging on his face, etc.. The man multi-tasks like nothing I've ever seen..

Any other names come to mind in the big time showman players that are also really good on the bass??

Here is a sample.. (no too much footage of him till towards the end, and a bit in the start)

Good find.. Flea also, I just remember when I saw them in concert he moves around a bit.. though not so much show dancing per say.

We're a trio, and our drummer sings... so I try to make as much of a show of it as possible with the guitarist to make up for the lack of a vocalist standing out front.

There are passages where I feel I have to anchor and knuckle down, but there are lots of parts in the songs we play that are straightforward enough that I can be jumping around.

And I do some backing vocals, but only if I can play the parts underneath them simply enough that I'm not gonna mess up.

The bass player for "The Dempseys". He plays an upright and dances all around and over his bass. He and the guitar player will both stand on his bass while either one plays it.

Sting used to do that with the Police. There's a live video from the early days showing him jumping around, punk-style, while playing a fretless bass, and he's like, a half tone sharp or flat, at times. Later, when he switched to a fretted one, he pulled it all off (singing, playing and leaping around).

The bassist for The Codetalkers, who plays an upright, lays down on top of his bass and plays it like that. He also picks his bass up and throws it on the drummer and the drummer plays it with his sticks. Not really dancing per se, but a lot of moving around.

Saw the Police back in the day two times... a great show.. one of the few bands that sound almost as good live as in the studio.. And he did dance around some.. but since he sang it wasn't as much.

The main thing that impresses me is the tight sound and time keeping while dancing, as I can dance a little here and there (not my personality though) but I'll miss something even if I only notice it!

ive got a live police dvd with sting playing a white spector, really great show, at one point he is jumping up and down on a trampoline, and his line doesnt even change, not even the slightest bit of hesitation.

Maybe not an outstanding bassist (haven't heard anything different from him), but Leo Lyons, bassist for Ten Years After, seems to be having seizures in the "I'm Going Home" performance from Woodstock 69.

I will never understand how Steve Harris plays those speedy galloping lines while sprinting back and forth across the stage.

He's certainly the master of the "gallup" bass style..

Iron Maiden puts on a great show, but and I'm afraid to say it (flame suit donned incase of emergency), I rather enjoy Murray and Smith even more than Harris at those shows!

They're both amazing guitarists!

I've seen Flea lie down on the ground, lie the bass in front of him, and keep playing lying down in the middle of the song only to pick the bass up, stand up and start right back. Looks fun
