lenny kottke from the good rats.

standout tracks are:
'klash-ka-bob'
'cherry river'
'injun joe'

you can see newer live vids of them on youtube, but very few acts compare to them in the days of the album 'live at last'

check em out on myspace, too. they've played with any major act that's come to the east cost of the US. they're in the rock n roll hall of fame, but they just couldn't "make it" in the commercial sense, even with a few radio hits in the seventies.

Freebo on early Bonnie Raitt stuff.

Emory Gordy on early Emmylou Harris

Jerry Jemmot- while a lot of people DO know him, he's still way under the general bass player radar.

Marcus is badass! Listen to the intro of "I Can"

Here's my list in no particular order:

I'm a huge fan of progressive rock (metal/krautrock. If anyone here likes the same, I STRONGLY urge you to check these guys out.

1.) John Glascock/Jethro Tull - This man has monster chops.
2.) Ken Forssi/Love - An incredibly inventive player
3.) Trevor Dunn/Mr. Bungle - Really fast and precise
4.) Derek Mo Moore/Nektar - Bassist of one of my absolute favorite bands, absolutely genious in his playing, but then again so is everyone else in that band...
5.)Gary Thain/Uriah Heep - Possibly one of the most perfect bassist I've ever heard.

edit: For the OP - Rutherford and Burnel are two phenominal bassists. I don'tknow the first one onyour list, but I think everyone knows Jaco

I don't hear much about these guys:
Ben Shepherd (soundgarden)
Robert DeLeo (STP)
Matt Sharp (Weezer)
John Wetton (King Crimson, plus a ton of other stuff)

Shepherd and Sharp because they were PERFECT for their bands. They just added so much chemistry that wasn't there without them. Weezer hasn't been the same since Matt left. DeLeo and Wetton just wrote fantstic basslines and in my opinion should be at the top of the list in their respective genres.
