Just got back from seeing Tori perform with a full band, including the talented Mr Jon Evans on bass.

He mostly played a 5 string Lakland J bass and a Tobias fretless 4, but also used a Shoreline Gold Precision & a malnourished upright for one song. During the first track of the set, Jon's slamming out these big finger-raked distorted chords on the Lakland, awesome stuff.

On Tori's recordings I prefer Justin Meldal-Johnson. Check "Songs from the Choirgirl Hotel" for some excellent bass playing.

Both of these guys got a dream gig - supporting somebody uber-talented but still allowed plenty of leeway for their own creativity. Jon looked like he was having an absolute ball

I saw Tori about 8-9 years ago in Colorado. She only played with a guitar player. I was thinking to myself, "how the f%^& can anyone play along with her", she goes off on these tangents. That dude has to be one fine bass player to follow her. Very entertaining show though.

Pick up the Welcome to Sunny Florida DVD. There is some great bass playing on there. John, IIRC is a Berklee grad and has some awesome skills and a great gig. I like how he uses a synth and fuzz on some tracks to give the band a different sound.

In Montana they have signs over bars that say,"Before engaging your mouth, make sure your mind is in gear!"

There is a few videos with Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bassplayer.tv and he talks about working with Tori, saying how recently (when the video was done), he was called up by her to come and make sounds...someone else was already playing the bass parts. But because of his love of FX she wanted him to create ambient sounds!!

She is one crazy chick!!
