Beastie Boys' Bass Player?

Sign in to disble this ad
Who is the Bass Player in the Beastie Boys? Those guys are so anonymous, that a search on Google said nothing to me.

Also, I heard a nice jazzy song on a late night drive from out of town. It was a jazz station, and after the song played, the announcer mentioned that the song was by the Beastie Boys! I didn't catch the name of the song or album, but I do recall him saying that it was an all instrumental album.

Anyone know the name of the CD? It was like old-school smooth jazz, but with a little kick to it

Maybe someone out there can correct me if I'm wrong, but the bass playing on those Beastie instrumentals is MCA, or Adam Yauch (sp?). If you check out their "...I shot that?" concert, they do a couple of tracks with each Beastie on thier respective instruments.

The song was probably from their newest album titled "The Mix Up".

Yes, Adam Yauch is the bass player.

you are correct. Adam "MCA" Yauch is the bassist

And it's a very good album as well. I can't get it out of my iPod.

I saw them in September and it was probably the most fun I had at a show all year. They played some new stuff as well as old classics like No Sleep Till Brooklyn, Rhymin And Stealin, and Sabotage.

The bassline for Gratitude is one of the first things I learned on bass. They always have a knack for putting in simple and effective bass parts, both when MCA plays them or they use a sample.

Probably a sample!

how so? Have you actually listened to either of their instrumental discs? I don't hear anything that sounds like sampled bass.

True enough James. Here they are live, with no samples in sight. Just Mike D, MCA and AdRock joined by Money Mark on the keys. The music actually starts at 1:33 after a long introduction.

I wouldn't call them virtuosos (although Adam Yauch aka MCA is a pretty solid bass player) but they can definitely groove.

Here's another cut, Pow, from the same album "The In Sound From Way Out". I just picked up a copy of their new album "The Mix Up" which is also all instrumental, but I haven't listened to it yet.

Hey Bruce,

I notice you didn't bold "live funk" or "MCA's cop-show metal number Sabotage", which features fuzzed out live bass.

Bu that's not really the point. Yes, the Beastie Boys use samples often, it's part of hip-hop. But their two instrumental albums "The Mix Up" and "The In Sound From Way Out" are just that, instrumental.

Here's their first video off the new album, showing them playing "Off The Grid" in the studio.

Again, I'm not trying to say they monster players. But they can play. No samples needed.

I never said they couldn't play - but there's no denying they used samples extensively!

You are referencing a couple of their hip hop / rap discs from 14 years ago and more. The second reference to samples is from 19 years ago.

How does that equate to "Probably a sample!" in the discussion of their "instrumental" releases

Sounds more like a bad attempt at humor and/or a failed troll attempt to me

THe album you're thinking of could be "The in sound from way out." Wonderful album.
And as many have already mentioned, yes the bass player is Adam Yauch. He is a really good bass player too. Does a lot of DB stuff.

yeah they used to be sample machines back when it was free to use a sample. surely did some sampling after that.
most of those songs off the in sound from way out are songs off older albums just compiled and released on this instrumental disc.
i'd venture to say most are originals, and fantastic i might add.

Thanks for all the replies. This thread has become very lively!

I'm going to try and pick this album up this weekend. I'm pretty sure the song I'm inquiring about was played with a DB 'cause it just had that sound.

The In Sound From Way Out is one of my favorite CD's for driving, working, etc. Very groovy!

Plus it contains just a little bit of musicianship outside of sampling!

Bongo you should check out "The Mix-Up". It's similar, but a little more cohesive (IMO) than "The In Sound".

But I agree, instrumental Beastie Boys albums are up there with the Meters in terms of great, groovy background music.

But I've decided that Neu! is the best driving music.
