I guess maybe its because Dirk Lance is one of my favorite bassists, but I can't stand Ben Kenny, or incubus after Morning view. They seemed to have lost there real groove and went more indie sounding for my tastes...
I really don't like Kenny's tone or his approach. Not trying to be a jerk, but I just don't dig it.
Dirk's new project looks amazing... From the tiny clips i've heard up to this point at least. |

JMHO | They were 21 when they wrote that album. He rarley slapped on make yourself, and didnt at all on Morning view. He grooved, and had the best tone i've ever heard. |

I like to listen to their older stuff too but you kow after a few times through I need something a little LESS top speed ya know? Being a little OLDER (I'm 30) Incubus is a band I've really grown up with and I like their new direction.
Dirk is still a great player and I can't wait till he does a new project but I'll never quit listening to Incubus.
It just seems like most people either LOVE or HATE Incubus since Dirk left.

The past two albums, in my opinion is incubus with a different bassist trying to be something they are not. I've bought the last two albums, and outside of Jose, I don't hear anything thats good to me... When I think of incubus, I think of groove... To me, they don't have that element anymore. |

Maybe it's just the overall production, but I liked "A Crow" more than "Make Yourself," and it's easily on par with "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." For some reason in the Dirk albums the bass is more subtly in the mix, but in "A Crow" it's there and pretty aggressive.
I actually like Kenney's bass lines a lot. They're melodic and groove fairly well. I think that the majority of people don't like Ben Kenney just because he's not Dirk Lance. So what if he's mostly known as a guitar player? I think if I'd never have known that he was then his bass lines would still be good in my book.
I think it's cool that Incubus wants to change. It's not like they didn't change after "Fungus Amongus" and I'm glad they did. Being a wannabe Mr. Bungle Chili Peppers band would have gotten old fast. |

I think it was a genius album, after that it seems to have gone backwards
to me. Especially with Brandon, he's gone from clever literature to whining pretty boy.
I don't like the band as a whole much anymore, but Ben Kenny is an amazing musician, especially his solo work.
And to whoever said Jose is the highlight of them now, I agree. Though he always has been for me.

| | | | I have to say that even as a bass player, Dirk Lance was not the reason I became an Incubus fan, nor was he the reason I remained an Incubus fan. The creativity of "Make Yourself" in the sea of crap that was modern rock in the late 90s is what brought me in, and Einzinger is the guy that keeps me in.
I think the reasons stated by some in this thread for not liking the "new" Incubus are exactly the reasons I do like the "new" Incubus. They are creative enough to tread new ground with each release. If "Light Grenades" sounds indie, so be it. They do indie a whole lot better than the majority of the indie bands I have heard out there. I couldn't have said it any better than InternalAffair. As much as I love "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" and "Fungus Amongus", the whole BunglePepper thing would have doomed them to obscurity. |

That said, if we were to make a car comparison, Kenney is like a Toyota Avalon. It's a really nice car. Alex (the old bassist) is like a Mercedes S Class in comparison, so trying to compare the two bassist is like trying to compare these two cars (there really is no comparison).
For those of you that noted that their music doesn't sound the same, the reason is because Alex was the primary song creator, so now that he's gone, I'm assuming Mikey is the main guy. I'm also a little disappointed with the Mikey has evolved as a player...he was very good, very cutting edge, now he's just blah.
The band is just different now...they really should have changed their name because it's really like a totally different band with Alex out of the picture.

| | | | Ben Kenney is the man! I love his lines, he's changed the way I'm playing. As for the Dirk vs. Kenney, I prefer Kenney more.
Reason: Kenney is not a slapper, he's not a tapper, he's just trying to make lines that sound musically appealing. I can relate to his passive approach. I'm not saying the above is bad, it's just not the direction I want to go in.
His best stuff can be heard on his second solo album Maduro. It doesn't hurt that he plays Mesa and Lakland, fools trying to copy me.
As for Incubus, Light Grenades SUCKED! Annamolly was the only track I really liked off at that album. I hope they come out with another A Crow Left of The Murder esque album. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
