The early Allman Brothers Band recordings (especially live) never cease to amaze me. Berry's playing is so creative and compelling, and he got such a nice punchy growly sound. Anyone know what gear he used?

Fender 400 PS amp driving four 2 X 15 Orion cabinets and The Showman, out of phase, for the top end. A Fender jazz bass with a Guild Starfire pickup added nicknamed "the Tractor" was his main bass I believe. He played Guilds as well. Used Rotosound roundwound! Love his playing!!!!!

From those pics it looks like he was mostly a pick player...

And that J-Bass is heavily modded! 2 J pups near the bridge and the starfire in the neck position, wow.

Man I used to have one of those Marshall 215 cabs that looks just like a 412. That thing was way loud! I wish I would have kept it!

THis is funny , I was just listen to Live at The Fillmore again the other day. I still havent gotten around to learning the lines though. Berry is one of my favorite bassists of all time . Duane specifically wanted a bassist who could trandsend the instrument like others had not and that could lift the band. I think Berry fit that perfectly.

Oh man, think of the uber-monster Berry would have become had he made it past his mid-20's...
