I know who most of the greats from 20-30 are, but what about bassists that have emerged in the last 5 years... Who are considered to be the best "new" bassists? The guy from Coldplay is alright, but I can't think of any others.

| | | | There are lots of great bassists coming out of a bunch of genres right now. Dan Briggs with between the buried in me is amazing. His first album with them came out in 2005 IIRC. There's also Arif Mirabdolbaghi with protest the hero. I wouldn't go so far as to call either of them the best bassist In the last five years, but IMO they're both fantastic players.

I would recommend Joe Lally. He has been around a hell of a lot longer than 5 years but has just within the past few years broken out and become a name for himself solo. His solo albums have Ian and Guy on guitar but, otherwise, they don't sound precisely like Fugazi... in that vein but more groove-oriented. Very cool stuff.

| | | | Also, he doesn't meet the qualifications of this thread's title but I'm going to go ahead and recommend him anyway... Mark Sandman is really cool. Yes, it's been 12 years since he passed (RIP) but Morphine remains one of the most criminally underheard bands I've come across, relative to how cool they sound. I still recommend them to people the same way I would a brand new band because they're tragically underappeciated.

| | | | Johnny Christ from Avenged Sevenfold is very talented, great bassist. I think he's been playing with them for about 7 years now. Definitely one of my favs.
