I think the best blues bass work I have ever heard is
Harvey Brooks on 'Albert's Shuffle' accompanying
Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper on the original recording
of Super Session. Circa 1965.

Period.

Willie Dixon played for Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Koko Taylor, Little Milton, Eddie Boyd, Jimmy Witherspoon, Lowell Fulson, Willie Mabon and more... That makes him the greatest in my eyes...

Ahhh the Chess years.

And Willie was a great songsmith and arranger. Kudos to that,
I was thinking more in terms of style and nuance.

In terms of experience and legend, Willie is the man.

Blue bassist

Yeah, all those cats are good, but who is taking Blues bass to the other side of the moon????.

Besides me, of course????..

One thing that I find lacking in Blues bassists is what blues guitar players already have...that totally in your face thing...

The snarl and pump and grind...not punk but over the top.

And all the hardcore blues guys are constantly busting on me, but blues is alive and if you don't put your own stamp on it you might as well go home.

Play the BLUES.Make your bass cry...you been busted as often as the guitar players and singers...make it CRY, moan, shout!!

SEE NOW ya got me goin!!!!

COLIN HODGKINSON

The only man that can play Robert Johnson chord-melody tunes on the bass.

I always dug Jerry Jemmont's playing on B.B. King's "Completely Well" record.

We must not forget ROSCOE BECK, to me he is to blues bass what SRV was to Blues guitar, a true modern master.

i don't know the name of the guy, but I saw Robben Ford in Sydney several years ago and this bass player that was with him was the man. An amazing live sound and this restrained feel that held back his chops until the necessary time. One of the most memorable bass performances i have ever seen. Slinky and sublime and then when the chops broke out the audience was in raptures. A total command of the blues like I have never seen since.

Hands down, Roscoe Beck! I don't think anyone comes close in skill level within that genre.

+1 Dunn is a great player (BLUES BROTHERS!), but I asscociate him more with Stax records and more of a soul r&b style.

Indeed he did, I just didn't think that fit into the blues category. Then again, I suppose they all those songs only have 3 chords anyway...
