Talking Best grunge bass player

Hey guys,
I will list a few who IMO (which is probably biased) were/are great 'grunge' bass players.

Feel free to post comments and additions on players you like.

Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam)
Kris Novaselic (Nirvana)
Matt Lukin (Mudhoney)
Ben Shepard (Soundgarden)

All make good claims. Novaselic for his detuning, low action and now classic lines.
Lukin's on stage antics, and killer slides.
The only somewhat 'bad' thing I remember hearing about Jeff Ament was when he was in a band called Green River, with Mark and Steve (Mudhoney) that mark wanted to give backstage passes to his mates, but jeff gave them all to record label guys, who mostly didnt turn up.

Its ok, my opinion is biased too.

Talking about who the best grunge player is like arguing over who has the best smelling *****.

Is that to imply grunge bassists don't have talent? Gotta love having a closed mind.

The Melvins and Earth are lumped into the grunge category, more because they are from the scene, so my vote: JOE PRESTON!

In the more traditional sense, I love Ben Shepard's playing with Soundgarden.

I was more implying that the style of music as a whole requires no talent.

Thumbs up

No way. The majority of grunge bass players have great talent (IMO). Its probably my most favourtie genre and style to play. I just wanted to know your opinion or favourtie.

I have probably forgotten a plethora of bassists from other bands like alice in chains, jane's addiction, sonic youth, screaming trees, melvins, and heaps of others that never got that big, or got the recognition they deserve.

Ament, by miles. Mostly for his versatility and melodicism, and the sheer fact that Pearl Jam are still relevant now.

His fretless stuff, especially, is stunning ("Oceans", anyone?), and his 12-string work has become seminal - I mean, who doesn't pick up an 8- or 12-string bass and try the "Jeremy" riff?

Kudos too to Ben Shepherd and the two Mikes (Starr and Inez) from AIC - all awesome musicians.

Inez has the chops, Ament the versaility.

Krist is bashed with NO reason. He does his job easily and even has a punkish groove that sounds very nice in Nirvana context.

Sure it's simple. But if simple = no talent, I'd go ahead and say rock, not limited to grunge, is a talentless genre. And if you're one of those snobs... cool, more power to you. I'm sure you are basing this one the 1 or 2 Nirvana songs you've heard.

Ament's a beast. My personal favorite 90's grunge bassist. One of the guys from that scene who I always felt like he could play other forms of music.

Surely you do not lump in rock like, say, Rush with grunge.
