Some of my faves, many mentioned already:

Adam Clayton, especially the Live at Slane Castle DVD. That defines the bottom heavy, growly, clear tone I like.

Matt Freeman of Rancid.

Timmy C., especially on Audioslave's Out of Exile.

Graham Maby with Joe Jackson.

Lenny Kravitz's player on Are You Gonna Go My Way, I think Jack Daly.

Let's not forget John Entwistle on My Generation. I believe those solo runs were recorded with a Jazz.

I've recently started listening to Interpol and I really dig Carlos D's J- Bass sound.

Either Noel Redding(Jimi Hendrix Experience), Greg Lake(King Crimson) or Dickie Petterson([RIP]Blue Cheer).

This is a cool thread.

Ian Hill had a great J-bass tone on every Priest album until '84. That is, when you could hear him.

If I remember correctly, I think Herbie Flowers used a jazz, too. I'm not sure if that's what he used when he recorded "Walk On The Wild Side".
Yes, Herbie has only owned one bass guitar in his life, a blue '62 (I think) Jazz

Tim Commerford, as already mentioned a few times, and
the bassist from My Morning Jacket.

Jeff Ament!

Not sure how much of his tone comes from that neck humbucker he puts on his basses, but his recordings with his Modulus J sound better to me than any other bass he has used.

Herbie's Jazz was a 1959. Lake Placid Blue over Fiesta Red. There's a great article about it here: http://curtisnovak.com/vintage/JazzBass59/

As for that Jazz bass tone, there's JPJ, the obvious winner, and Geddy, McCartney, Herbie Flowers, Entwistle with his tapewounds on My Generation. Not the best, but Jeremy Davis has a great tone for a younger guy.

Not sure if these count, but Duff did use a JAZZ Special and Pino's Jaguar (they're Jazz pickups, people!) tone with The Who. His tone really popped out quite well at that recent 12-12-12 concert. Bell Boy was amazing.

Les Claypool on Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. As far as I know he used the red Jazz that Geddy gave him. He used it on all\most of Rhinoplasty album too.

I'd also like to mention Ben Shepperd on Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, and Down On The Upside. He used flats and made it sound more like a P at times...still awesome.

Jerrod from the Melvins\Big Business gets a pretty crazy sound out f his J too.

Lot of great suggestion already, love me some JPJ. One that sticks out to me is David "DeLa" LaBruyere's tone on the first couple John Mayer albums, I believe most of the tunes are his early 60's Jazz.

Not sure if they're considered "rock", but Mark Stoermer of The Killers had an AWESOME Jazz tone on "Hot Fuss".

Really great to see the guy from Foghat getting some love. I've often started to change the channel on Foghat, but that bass is too good to deny.
