Great article! Although it seems Herbie's bass is a prototype, I'm sure the jazz bass didn't go on sale at all until 1960.

The Tractor!

It's hard to argue with John Paul Jones. Legions of bass players saw and heard that Sunburst J and were just sold forever on that image and tone.

Craig MacGregor has a great live sound but their studio stuff lacked the same drive.

I also like the sound of Bruce Hall, Mel Schacher, Fran Sheehan

Anthony Jackson on his J named Career Girl. I think it has a P neck and brass hardware. Might even be active.

I think Ben's bass tone got a little indistinct on Superunknown and Down On The Upside, I believe after he began using flats all the time (or just plucking lighter, cause flats can do that sound too). Definitely a nice fat j-bass tone on the later two records but Badmotorfinger was very cutting and aggressive
Those are my favorite J bass tones too.

I agree with Geddy, Mike Levene and Tommy Shannon. However I failed to see the great Jaco being mentioned, or did I just miss his name?

Jaco certainly rocked but he wasn't really one who played rock MUSIC.
It's cool people are mentioning Tommy Shannon. I didn't realise he was known for his trusty Jazz bass until fairly recently. To me he was always a Precision guy and his P tone on the SRV stuff is one of the best.

Isn't that his Rickenbacker?

I think Band on the Run is Jazz Bass. I think it's all he used for the recording.

I could be wrong.

I'm going with Bryan Beller of The Aristocrats, Mike Keneally, Dethklok (although he's using Mike Lull's fantastic-sounding T4 & T5 Basses on that gig), Steve Vai, or his own solo material. In my book he nails the "Modern Jazz Bass" tone when using this main red Mike Lull Modern 5 (which is now his Signature Bass from Lull), Modern 5 fretless or Modern-Vintage 4 J-Basses. Even though he's gone to using a Lull 5-string P/J on some of the Aristocrats material...

this is just horrible music, IMHO... and I don't dig this super-clean, "activ-bassy" sound...

+1 to Timmy C.

Juan Alderet tone in Big Sir is superb - but that's a modded 1970 frettles P (with added J-Pickup, so it's a PJ) - i wouldn't call this a Jazz Bass

I'm going to be unoriginal and say Geddy's J-Bass tone on Moving Pictures. His newer J-bass tone is not as good.

i think Justin Meldal Johnson just nailed such a perfect pick tone on the tour with Nine Inch Nails:

Quote from JMJ himself:

Geddy with DiMarzio Model J's > Tech 21 VT Bass > Sans Amp PSA 1.1 > Palmer speaker simulator. Boo yah, there's the tone.
i'm not sure if it is the jazz bass or the jaguar bass he also played on this particular song, but great great bass sound and playing for sure:
