Green day are corporate rock stars not punks and are as far away from the punk ideal as is possible to be

As the great Jello Biafra wrote `they`ve turned rock n roll rebellion into Pat Boone sedation, making sure there`s nothing left of the imagination`in his `mtv get off the air` song !

I used to think this way too but then I out grew letting a scene dictate what I should think. I mean, there's no way to achieve the success that a band like Green Day has without absolutely busting your a**. I just can't fault a band for trying to always take it a step farther and succeeding. It's encouraging, to me, that you don't have to necessarily be manufactured and choreographed by some puppet master pulling the strings to make it big in music.

I've never been a fan of Green Day but man, Mike Dirnt was very cool when I had a chance to meet him. He was certainly not too "corporate" to hold some Frustrators (his other band) rehearsals in the dingy basement of the punk house I live in. He wasn't too big of a star to hang out and have a meal with the housemates. He wasn't too cool to DJ at the local punk bar a couple nights while he was in town. And he was certainly not above hanging out and chatting up anyone who wanted to talk to him while he was here. Hell, he even took the time to make a cameo in a student film I was working on then.

I suppose I'm not trying to change any minds here, just saying that "punk" is different things to different people. To many, it's simply a style of music and like it or hate it, Green Days music is pretty obviously punk rock.

Also, don't fool yourself into believing that the first wave of punk groups, like The Dolls, The Ramones, and The Stooges weren't trying to become stars.

Those bands, during those times,...were not on the best track to becoming famous.....they were going way against the grain.

None of them fit into an 'establishment' role from the start.
They were dangerously 'uncommerical', and no one could have bet on them becoming widely successful. There was no alternative radio, MTV, or internet then,...there were home made 'fanzines'. That's when you had to bust your ass to be heard outside a few large inner cities. There was no group of 'punk kids' in every middle class suburb. Everything was determined by a few giant media conglomerates. There was Album-Oriented Rock, Progressive Rock, Mainstream Pop, Disco, Heavy Metal, Soul, and a few others. I saw the Clash and Johnny Thunders play in the late-70's when virtually no one in my high school classes could even tell you what 'Punk' music was, and that was just a couple of miles outside of New York City.

Those bands of the early Punk years, and those of their ilk,....paved the way for bands like Green Day. There existed a huge demographic of 'Punk' enthusiasts, solidly in place from the start for Green Day that wasn't there for those earlier groups.

The good thing about this forum is that its a good way to get discussions going, I like reading others points of view, it broadens your own in a positive way

Have a look at the attached photo of my son and captain sensible taken friday at the damned gig in bournemouth, I like the captains punk pose, the man is a real gent and took the time to have a laugh with us at the merchandise stall, he is probably the coolest punk of all time IMO of course

The opening to Myage on the same album is still to this day one of my favorite warm up excercises. Listening to that song is like drinking three cups of coffee.

Karl's still better though....
