Best rock basslines of all time

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi

I'm looking for new stuff to learn and was wondering if people could recommend some cool basslines to learn. I mainly like rock but any others are fine too. I've been playing for a couple of years but want to learn some classic lines for inspiration.

Thanks in advance

For students who have been at it a few years, depending on their skill level, I'd throw "Apache Rose Peacock (RHCP) and "Big Time" (Miles Davis/Marcus Miller) at them. That always ended in them throwing away their GnR records and diving into funkier things!

"New Years Day" by U2. Try playing that line and not swaggering. Obviously not the most technically difficult, but for feel, its hard to top.

This is the best slap rock bassline of all times IMHO. This live version because the album
version uses synth.

War Pigs - Black Sabbath but really any of the early Sabbath stuff rules. The first four albums really are the best IMO. I love the later stuff as well but those first four were so inspirational for me.

For an up and coming rock bassist this is a great start, particularly Bob Daisley on Bark at the Moon, Diary and Blizzard of Ozz. Geezer is of course a good place to learn from. They are very different bass players but once you kind of "decode" the way they approach bass lines you will start to be able to play their stuff much easier and have a couple of apporaches to writing your own lines for this type of music. Rush is good too, but with them the devil is in the details. A lot of Geddy's parts are not terribly challenging initially, but its the presentation that makes or breaks it.
