Best Rock Rhythm Section

Bassist & Drummer as a system.

Personally I'll give a ton of credit to John Bonham & John Paul Jones but they don't win for me. I have to go with Neil Peart & Geddy Lee of Rush.

Ooh there's a huge selection out there and I'm assuming that we're not listing blues or funk rhythm sections. Here's some that spring instantly to mind;

Entwistle/Moon
Fraser/Kirke
Squire/Bruford
Levin/Bruford
Dirnt/Cool
Sting/Copeland (early years)
B Thomas/P Thomas
Butler/Ward

I could go on, but I'll let others have a shot too.

Lessard/Beauford (Dave Matthews Band)
Flea/Smith (RHCP)
Reddding/Mitchell (Jimi hendrix Experience - rock/blues)

now move into funk r&b and that's a different story!

Deal/Lovering - Pixies
Vega/Cage - Quicksand
Cheng/Cunningham - Deftones
Greenwood/Selway - Radiohead
Bogdan/Stanier - Helmet
P-Nut/Sexton - 311

I like the above combos a lot - even if they never reached the same level of status as Zeppelin, Rush etc. All are great at locking in and making the overall sound better without getting in the way or playing all over each other.

I think Tre Cool is an awesome drummer and Dirnt must be praised for keeping up and locking with him. These things are always going to be personal, as to the best, there's no such thing, it's just personal preference.

Here's another one for you

Rainey/Purdie (if you count Steely Dan as rock that is)

Flea/Smith are underrated as a team. Smith is an excellant drummer.

Agreed! I'd go so far as to say he is a better drummer than flea is a bass player. I don't think Flea is a slouch by any means.
