Well, I can't say I've heard all the great bassist, but I would have to say Jaco. In one note (on any bass), you know who you're listening to. Much like BB King.

the best bass tone i ever heard live was from the bass player in the old 80s hair band jackyl. i tried to research him on the net but really couldnt find any info except he wasnt the original bass player and he used to be the lead guitar player from a band called brother cane back in the early 90s. all i could tell is he was playing a real nice looking tobias.

My favs:

Finger
- Geddy Lee
- Dirk Lance
- Stuart Zender
- Robert Deleo
- Trip Wamsley
- Jaco on fretless

Slap
- Marcus Miller

Pick
- Chris Squire

I should also comment that IMHO, Stu Hamm has one the most awful tones I`ve ever heard with his Fender Bass (in GHS albums for example). It`s hard to believe that such a great player "allows" those tones to be recorded.

Cliff Burton (Not really Anesthesia, but any song where he actually uses a bass amp)
Geddy Lee
John Entwistle
Lemmy of Motorhead
(wow they all play/have played ric 4001/4003's!)
Steve Harris' tone is unique, which is all i like about it - too trebly, I think. Great player though.
Jaco on fretless
Ynwgwie! (yes, he plays bass for himself)
Billy Sheehan.

Robert Sledge has disgusting tone. Listen to "Army" (Ben Folds Five) to see what I mean. He played the 'ish out of his Epiphone Les Paul through a stack of Orange amps and some overdrive/distortion pedals.

Oh man, also, "The Last Polka" is just... dayum. His lines inspire my playing like what.

Geddy Lee (love his recent tone once he brought back the Jazz Bass)
Doug Pinnick (his 12 string tone is amazing and to me a realization of how good a 12 string bass can sound)
Tim Crommerford (kicks in both Rage and Audioslave)
Eddie Jackson of Queensryche (his Spector tone on "Operation Mindcrime" and "Empire" is awesome)
Jason Newstead (really great tone added to Metallica's sound)
John Paul Jones (great warm tone in Zep and a world of cool multi string tones on his solo works)
Steve Harris (a unique tone that defined Maiden's sound)
Duff McKagen (I've always loved his tone in both GNR and VR)
Sting (great tone for many years)
John Entwistle (no one else like it)
I also thought that Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder) and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam really had some great fretless tones that worked well in the context of hard rock, which is not always an easy thing to fit into that genre of music.

Lenny Kravitz on 'Rock and Roll Is Dead', Stuart Zender on Jamiroquai's 'Too Young to Die', Marcus Miller's 'Power', Jaco on anything, but mostly 'Come On, Come Over', Chris Wolstenholme on anything, etc. There's rarely any Bassists that I hear anymore who's sound I like.

Bryan Beller
Tony Franklin
Sean Malone
Mikes Starr and Inez (for all intents and purposes in AIC, the same tone)
Pete Steele (Love it or hate it, it's as unique as you can get)
Eddie Jackson circa "Empire" and "Promised Land"
Jason Newsted circa "Load/Reload" (A shame that he finally gets a spot in the mix starting at their downward spiral)
